Dish & Drink KC: Brunching and lunching at Prima Facie & Sushi Nami

This past weekend, a group of friends, my daughter, and I set out for our first local hike of the year at Parkville Nature Sanctuary. The forest wasn’t quite green yet—winter’s grip still lingered, leaving the trees bare and the trails lined with fallen leaves. But there was something peaceful about it, the way the muted colors made the sky seem bigger and the quiet creeks felt more alive.

The trails wound through rocky outcroppings, wooden bridges, and a mix of steep and gentle inclines, making for a hike that was both invigorating and scenic. By the time we finished, some of us had worked up an appetite, so we made our way to downtown Parkville in search of something good to eat.

Parkville’s downtown is small but full of charm, with historic buildings, boutique shops, and a welcoming atmosphere. That’s where we found Prima Facie, a cozy bistro and market serving up coffee, fresh smoothies, and thoughtfully crafted meals. The space was bright and inviting, with plenty of natural light. If the temperature had been just a bit warmer, we would’ve taken advantage of their charming patio, but instead, we settled inside, ready to refuel.

I ordered a strawberry banana smoothie ($6) and avocado toast ($12) with a bowl of fruit—something filling but not too heavy.

The smoothie, made with 100% real fruit and no added sugars, was naturally sweet, thick, and creamy, and was both refreshing and indulgent. The avocado toast was even better. The sourdough bread was thick, fluffy, and seemed lightly toasted, making it sturdy enough to hold the rich, flavorful avocado spread without being too crunchy. The spread itself was bright and seasoned with salt and red pepper flakes. On the side, the fresh fruit was crisp and vibrant, a refreshing contrast to the richness of the toast.

After my daughter devoured her Turkey Apricot sandwich and my friend finished every bite of her vibrant Powerbowl, we stepped back outside, full and refreshed. With spring just around the corner, we couldn’t help but anticipate the return of the Parkville markets across the train tracks. A stroll through the stalls, picking up fresh produce and local goods, would have been the perfect way to round out our morning—another reason to come back soon.

Sometimes, a solo lunch date is exactly what you need—a little time to unwind, enjoy good food, and let your mind wander. That’s exactly what I found at Sushi Nami at Wok n Roll, a bright and charming sushi spot tucked away in the Northland, conveniently close to home. With quick, attentive service and a welcoming atmosphere, it was the perfect place to treat myself to a casual and quiet meal.

I ordered two rolls: the Sexy Angel Roll ($13.99) and a Yellowtail Roll ($7.50).

The Sexy Angel Roll was a flavorful standout—spicy tuna, cucumber, and scallion wrapped up and topped with buttery white tuna and a spot of sriracha. The contrast of textures was just right, with the creamy tuna melting into the slight crunch of the cucumber. The touch of sriracha didn’t overpower but instead complemented the richness of the fish, making each bite balanced and satisfying.

The Yellowtail Roll, on the other hand, was simple—maybe too simple. With no extra toppings or sauces, it was eatable but a bit underwhelming. I should have known from the straightforward description that it wouldn’t be the most exciting order, but I was hoping for something a little more dynamic.

To punch up the flavor, I took a page from an old friend’s playbook and mixed soy sauce with a little wasabi, creating a bold, slightly spicy dipping sauce. That small tweak made all the difference, bringing out the depth of the fish and adding a satisfying kick to each bite.

Overall, Sushi Nami made for a solid lunch spot, especially for a quick and casual sushi fix in the Northland. Next time, I’ll opt for a roll with a little more flair.
