Dead Restaurant List for March 2014

As we bid adieu to the month of March, we also say a sorrowful sayonara to a rather significant number of restaurants in the metro that closed their doors during the month (or a few weeks prior); some had been longtime survivors, like Crown Center’s Kabuki Japanese Restaurant (it closed in January after 28 years), and others, like the Pacific Buffet at 8725 Metcalf lasted less a year (its predecessor in the same location, Royal Buffet, barely made it to five months).

Last rites were also administered, sadly, to Esther’s African Cuisine in Lenexa; Marv’s Original Delicatessen in Leawood; Guadalajara Cafe in Watts Mill Plaza in south Kansas City; Diego’s Bar & Grill in Gladstone (it lasted about three months); Sugo’s Spaghetteria in Overland Park; Interno Restaurant in downtown Lawrence; and Wil Jenny’s Tables & Tap in south Johnson County. One of the fastest open-and-shut cases was restaurateur Scott Welsch’s second attempt at making a go of his popular Orange Box luncheonette at 240 Linwood (in a venue that has had so many tenants that it’s impossible to keep them all straight); it was over in two months.

A longtime tenant on the Country Club Plaza, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, ended its 17-year-run in March, citing the conclusion of its lease.
