Cooking-off some chili this weekend at Songbird Cafe

By OWEN MORRIS
As reported in Pitch Forks this week, Songbird Café in Kansas City is holding a pro/am Chili-Bowl Contest this Saturday at 11 a.m.
Chili is such an idiosyncratic food that eating someone’s chili is like peering into their soul… or their gut. Two weekends ago several Pitch staffers participated in the Art Incbuator’s successful chili fundraiser, which featured a staggering 30 types of chili. It was a lot of fun but some participants complained (or their spouses complained later) that 30 types is a lot of chili. Almost more chili than the human body can withstand.
Songbird Café’s contest features an easier-to-handle 10 types, with pros like the Broadway Roasting Co. and Nosh Catering competing against amateurs like Randy with the KCK Police Department and television host Stephane Suetos.
There is a $10 entry fee which buys cornbread, a drink and a bowl of your favorite chili — along with a chili voting ballot.
