Cloudy with a chance of ice cream

When ice cream and climate control technology are combined, the results are slightly controversial and unexpectedly delicious.

Inhabitat recently featured The Cloud Project — an ice cream van that has been retrofitted with industrial water sprayers that release a mixture of liquid nitrogen and ice cream. The van was the graduation project of artists Zoe Papadopulou and Cat Kramer and was displayed at the the Royal College of Art Interaction Design exhibition in London, England.

The water sprayers are the kind used to seed clouds with rain, what is known as climate control technology. The project is meant to spark a large-scale discussion about nanotechnology — the manipulation of matter at the electron level. Ultimately, this is a statement about environmental awareness couched within a serving of ice cream.

Although the mist (termed “artillery released ice cream ingredients”) only really has the aroma of ice cream and not the taste, the artists plan to hand out ice cream made via liquid nitrogen as part of their curious mix of science and dessert. This gives a whole new meaning to the Bomb Pop
