Closed: C. Withers Restaurant & Catering

Earlier this month, Fat City took a look in the rearview mirror and bid farewell to all of the restaurants that closed in 2011. It was a bittersweet list, to say the least. We’re already keeping a tally of the restaurants that have been declared morte in 2012 (not nearly as many, we hope). You see, in the Killa City, even beloved restaurants go away, some by natural causes, and some get bumped off.
In the case of the very endearing little family-operated barbecue joint at 3613 Broadway, C. Withers Catering and Restaurant, the owner Cardell Withers decided that it was time to seek new challenges after selling modestly priced smoked meats and excellent side dishes for several years. He hopes to return to food service again — in some capacity — soon.
In the meantime, some interesting things are shaking on this stretch of Broadway. The OutaBounds Sports Bar & Grill now has new owners and is serving food again beginning each evening at 4 p.m. “We’ve got sandwiches, grilled items, appetizers, and chips and salsa,” said one bartender. “All kinds of good stuff.”
