Classy Chocolate has righteous chocolate chip cookies in Liberty

  • Just look for the storefront that looks like a cake.

Classy Chocolate (18 W. Kansas, in Liberty) is blissfully cool when I walk in on a Wednesday afternoon, the frigid air keeping the chocolate-covered strawberries and iced cakes from sweating. I’m wishing the air conditioner in my car worked as well as the virtual walk-in cooler that is the tiny bakery in downtown Liberty.

I spend an extra minute making up my mind, but I’m here for the cookies. A pastry case is filled with chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate, oatmeal chocolate chip, and iced sugar cookies.

“I’d like a cookie.” I say.

“Chocolate chip?” replies the woman at the counter.

  • The chocolate chip is classic.

That’s how I know I’ve come to a place that does something very well. She makes my selection for me because there is no other reason on earth that I’d be here than for the chocolate chip cookies. The cookies are $1.25 each or four for $4.50. I leave with four.

The wax-paper bag has some serious weight in my hand, and I’m a bit worried that I’ll need some milk to tackle the cookies that are roughly grapefruit-size in diameter. But the cookie is soft, without being undercooked. It’s got a nice chew, and there’s a bit of salt that makes the chocolate stand out. These are not just marvels of engineering. They’re worth seeking out in Liberty.

Grab a cookie, or four, and throw on a Turtle on a Stick – a chocolate and caramel enrobed pretzel stick. Classy Chocolate is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The phone number is 816-781-2260.
