Celebrating a belated Cinco de Mayo this weekend

Did you party on Tuesday? Chances are you didn’t. That’s the problem with holidays that fall in the middle of the week. But fear not, because the largest Cinco de Mayo party — the 10th annual Fiesta Kansas City — starts tonight at Crown Center.
The three-day celebration features a number of events for the whole family, such as a jalapeno eating contest,
a tortilla rolling contest and a tortilla flinging contest. Leave the children behind, though, when entering Margarita Cove, where there’s a margarita-making competition all three nights as well as stiff drinks throughout the day.
The main attraction is the arts, with more than a dozen bands on two stages, 15 painters showing their wares and vendors selling jewelry. And, of course, I’m hoping for lots of good food.
Fiesta Kansas City is free. The music starts tonight at 5:30 and goes until 11. Tomorrow’s hours are noon to 11 p.m., and Sunday it’s noon to 10 p.m.
