Browne’s Irish breakfast tomorrow

St. Patrick’s Day is a signal that spring is nearly here — and confirmation that even though we live in the 21st Century, there are still times it’s OK to puke in public. It’s less than six weeks away.
To get in the mindset early requires a steady diet of Guinness for dinner and a traditional Irish feast for breakfast. What does an Irish feast entail, ye ask? There’s rashers and bangers, or as they’re better known in these parts, bacon and sausage. Has anyone figured out why we don’t call sausage “bangers” in America? Because “bangers” is such a great, expressive name (rashers on the other hand sounds like something I once got from my gym’s whirlpool). There are also fried eggs and country fried potatoes. So far that sounds like something Denny’s might give away, but then the Irish add two sides that Americans rarely eat at breakfast: a tomato cut in half and grilled, and baked beans.
Baked beans and eggs may sound like a gross combination, but it’s actually quite good. You soak up the bean sauce in some hard bread and dip it into the egg. Your mouth will thank you even if your heart doesn’t.
So now that your tastebuds are watering for an Irish breakfast, there’s the problem of getting one in the states. That’s where Browne’s Irish Market in midtown comes in. Tomorrow, Saturday, at 8:30 a.m. Browne’s serves an authentic Irish breakfast like the one described above, along with a choice of coffee, juice and, the most authentic, tea.
Browne’s is the oldest Irish establishment in town and the interior reflects not only Ireland but a Kansas City past. You have several opportunities to visit Browne’s for the breakfast. It takes place every Saturday at 8:30 a.m. until March 14 and, of course, on March 17 as well.
