Breakfast to go: Winstead’s

Speak clearly, please

Kansas City’s oldest and most iconic burger joint, Winstead’s, has been serving breakfast for years. Not as long as its signature steakburgers and shakes, of course. The flagship Winstead’s location on the Country Club Plaza opened in 1940 as a traditional drive-in, with carhops. Now customers eat inside — it’s actually a quiet and relaxing dining spot during the morning hours — or use the drive-through window. It’s not exactly the snappiest drive-through experience, but Winstead’s does offer a few items that the major fast-food chains don’t, including breakfast sandwiches on toast (wheat, white or rye), really fine biscuits-and-gravy that don’t taste as if they were formulated in a laboratory, light pancakes and a healthy cup of yogurt dappled with fresh bluebberies, sliced bananas and granola.

Eating the biscuits-and-gravy while driving? Not a good idea.
