It’s been said that great art can come only from suffering. Those who said that must have been teetotalers. Great art comes from inspiration, like the kind one might get after a sip or two of a brew that has been made since the time of the Egyptians. Payton Kelly, the Boulevard Brewing Co.’s creative director, will be at the Plaza Branch (4801 Main) of the Kansas City Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 8, to discuss the local brewery’s label design process.

Kelly’s drawings have been gracing the sides of Boulevard bottles for more than two decades. The former Hallmark artist sat down with The Pitch back in May to lay out the redesign and launch for KC Pils (formerly known as Boulevard Pilsner). Boulevard is one of the few craft breweries with an in-house artist. Be sure to ask how Kelly assigns colors to brew labels if it doesn’t come up during the talk. The event is free, but you have to RSVP. A reception with free Boulevard samples begins at 6 p.m.
