Outside of a football parking lot, I rarely drink beer on weekend mornings. But sometimes one’s liver must suffer for the cause. This past Saturday, I spent the morning and part of the afternoon with the employees of the Boulevard Brewing Co. as they judged a home-brew competition in the brewery’s warehouse.

The “Wort Transformation 2013” contest was so named because Boulevard gave out free 5-gallon batches of wort (malted barley) to area home brewers in May. They only stipulation was that they bring it back in July as a finished beer. The winner was chosen Saturday, and the story in tomorrow’s paper and online will look at the judging process. But for now, I thought I’d give you a peek into some of what I saw that won’t be in the final story.
