The Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition scored a coup last week, announcing that Missouri state Rep. Beth Low will be the year-old organization’s first director.

“We are thrilled to have someone as skilled and committed as Beth Low to move us forward as we make improvements to policies that affect the food we eat,” said Gretchen Kunkel, president of KC Healthy Kids, which helped launch the GKFPC last year.

Low, who represents the 39th District, is not running for re-election in 2010, even though she wouldn’t be termed out until 2012. She instead opted to head the advocacy organization that promotes local and sustainable food practices.

“Every community has a food system, whether we are aware of it or not,” said Low. “We need to look carefully at how our local policy decisions are directly or indirectly affecting the quality and access to food for all members of our community.”
