Autumn is over: Are pumpkin desserts on the way out?

There was still snow lingering on the ground in Kansas City today as late as 2 p.m. The Old Farmer’s Almanac reports that the official first day of winter in 2013 will begin with the solstice on December 21. I say winter begins with the first snowfall, and today is winter, baby.
But does this change of seasons put the big chill on the plethora of fall-inspired pumpkin pastries I’ve been enjoying lately? In some quarters, yes. Today was the final day to get a spicy pumpkin doughnut from Donut King (2320 Armour Road in the Northland, 816-472-1412); starting tomorrow, eggnog doughnuts are the seasonal special. Pumpkin-doughnut season has also passed at the local Krispy Creme locations.
Pumpkin sweets still rule, however, at The French Bee Bakery in Parkville (404 East Street, 816-673-0117), which continues to offer pumpkin pie, pumpkin chai scones, and pumpkin bars and snickerdoodles.
The Merchants Pub & Plate restaurant in Lawrence (746 Massachusetts, 785-843-4111) has a pastry plate with a quintet of pumpkin delicacies. Called “Pumpkin Patch,” the plate features a slice of moist pumpkin roll; a dollop of pumpkin mousse; a chewy pumpkin coconut macaroon; a scoop of house-made pumpkin ice cream; and a shard of “pepita glass,” a sugary translucent brittle made with pumpkin seeds.
“It will be on the menu for at least a month,” one of the servers told me. “This dessert menu just came out.”
And if you, Fast Pitch readers, have any other suggestions for venues still serving pumpkin desserts, let us know in the comment section.
