Shirley Oyer has a change of plea hearing scheduled

- It looks like Shirley Oyer is changing her plea.
Shirley Oyer, one of the defendants in Missouri’s largest false-claims tax-fraud case ever, has scheduled a change of plea hearing. Oyer was one of the subjects of a Pitch story last month that profiled her colorful family.
Oyer’s son Christopher wrote a book about his belief that he is the second coming of the prophet John the Baptist. Her other son, John Micheal, is feuding with Kansas City in an effort to regain custody of his pet chimp, Suco. That saga was chronicled in the Pitch last spring.
Oyer is charged with helping tax clients file fraudulent tax forms in an effort to receive undeserved tax refunds. The alleged scheme operated in several states and was headquartered in a Blue Springs karate studio owned by Gerald Poynter II. The defendants are accused of trying to get nearly $100 million from the IRS in illegal tax refunds. Earlier this week, two more defendants in the case pleaded guilty. In July, two other defendants pleaded guilty.
Oyer pleaded not guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States and five counts of filing false claims for tax refunds. She is scheduled to change her plea on September 6 at 11 a.m.
