Summoning all nerdy tattoo fans and rad Magic: The Gathering players: Level One Game Shop and Fountain City Tattoo are bringing a two-day game night and flash event to your doorstep.

On October 9th, 1-9 pm, Level One will host a casual Commander night, where players of all skill levels and experience can come meet new people, play some games, and shop with a handful of vendors.

The next day, October 10th, Fountain City Tattoo will host a Magic: The Gathering-themed flash event, from 11am-7pm.

The beloved game store in the River Market will be raffling off gift certificates for tattoos during the Commander Night. Additionally, anyone who attends will receive a $50 dollar voucher for the flash event the next day.

Local vendors will be in the hall outside of the game store, so even if you aren’t looking to sit down and play, there is still plenty to do.

Benni, the manager and half of the coordination for the event, hopes to bring “the culture of a skatepark-style event.”

“Pop-up culture exists in both worlds and we thought we could bring them together to do something really unique.”

The connection between Level One and Fountain City began when Caleb, a tattoo artist at Fountain City, walked into Level One as a complete Magic: The Gathering beginner. Benni reflects, “We helped him get started and then all of the other artists from Fountain City got into it.”

“This event is catered towards beginners and people just getting started.”

If you have never played before, there will be community members excited to teach you, “just look for the people in the wristbands.” The shop will also have demo decks to help you learn the fundamentals.

There has been a steady rise in popularity of Magic: The Gathering over the past few years. This is due to the release of a crossover IP called Universes Beyond. These include: The Hobbit, Marvel Super Heroes, and Final Fantasy. With the video game version making Magic even more accessible, the best time to start playing was yesterday, but today is the second best.

After a night of playing with your existing party or possibly meeting a new play group, you can rendezvous the next day to get Magic: The Gathering-inspired flash at a discount. Designs will start at $100 dollars and go up from there. Flash sheets and designs are set to release the day of the event, so be sure to stalk Fountain City’s Instagram (@fountaincitytatoo) for the post.

Benni revealed that they and some other shop employees have gotten a sneak peek at the designs and said that they are “pretty killer.”

“They are keeping it pretty secret until the release.”

While you wait for your tattoo, Ghost Kitchen, a popular food truck, will be serving a Magic: The Gathering-themed menu, just outside of the studio.

Two left shoes are coming together to bring Kansas City a unique collaboration that welcomes two very different worlds to a night of socialization and games.

If you choose to come, you will probably see me at a far table in the corner, going completely winless with my very special (to me) deck. Come play a few games, if you dare. “Any of you are welcome at any time!” – The Hobbit
