Dish & Drink KC: L.C.’s Hamburger truck stays busy, plus revisiting a wings legend
I’ll be the first to admit it: Facebook isn’t exactly my favorite app.
But every now and then, there’s a reason to keep it around. For me, one of those reasons is L.C.’s Hamburger truck.
The locally owned food truck pops up all over Kansas City, and the only reliable way to keep up with where they’re headed next is through their Facebook page.
At a recent event in West Bottoms where L.C.’s pulled up, the line stayed full for nearly the entire event. It’s always a good sign when a food truck has a crowd gathered around it before you’ve even had a chance to place an order.
The menu covers a lot of ground, not limiting itself to burgers. Fried fish and chicken, smashburger fries, Philly cheesesteaks, burgers, and plenty more. What immediately caught my attention, though, was the fact that they included vegan options on the menu. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference, especially at community-centered events where people arrive with all kinds of dietary needs and preferences.
I ordered the mushroom burger. Loaded with grilled onions and bell peppers, I topped it with mustard and vegan mayo before digging in.
It was fire.
The mushrooms had great texture, the vegetables added a nice sweetness, and the seasoning did exactly what seasoning is supposed to do: show up. Every bite was packed with flavor. Nothing felt like an afterthought or a substitute. This wasn’t a “good for a vegan option” burger. It was simply a good burger.
L.C.’s Food Truck is a pop-up. Follow their Facebook page to stay tapped in.
After a weekend full of Pride events, performances, and late nights, my girlfriend and I found ourselves at The Peanut, one of Kansas City’s oldest bars and grills, with one thing on our minds: wings.
Starving and thinking with our stomachs instead of common sense, we ordered a dozen wings. What we forgot is that The Peanut serves full wings.
The order arrived charred and coated in extra-hot buffalo sauce, looking every bit as excessive as it sounds. We quickly realized our mistake, managing only two wings each before tapping out.
The good news? Those four wings were outstanding.
It’s been years since my last visit, and I genuinely didn’t remember the wings being this good. The char added a smoky depth that paired perfectly with the buffalo sauce, while the meat stayed juicy and flavorful throughout. The extra-hot sauce brought plenty of heat without overwhelming the seasoning underneath.
Too often, legendary local spots survive on reputation alone. The Peanut’s wings still earn theirs.
Sometimes revisiting an old favorite is disappointing. Sometimes it reminds you exactly why people keep coming back.
This was the latter.
The Peanut has multiple locations. This was at 6409 N Cosby Ave., Kansas City, MO.
