In a blend of nature and art, the Lucid Illusion Collective will host a parade on the Missouri River on June 8, as decked-out boats cruising the river compete for the “best decorated” prize. The unique, Mardi Gras-inspired event will set sail at 3 p.m. from the Kaw Point Park ramp near Strawberry Hill and travel to River Front Park in Northeast Kansas City.

The River Front Trail downtown will provide the optimal view of the tricked-out vessels. You can sit along the trail and watch or ride a bike along the parade route—whatever floats your boat.

Participation in the parade is free for those hoping to get on the water themselves. Fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, and all other types of boats are welcome to accessorize their rigs and follow the procession.

Before take-off, free classes will be available to explain the process of creating boats from recycled materials and fabrication advice from expert boat makers. Once the boats are docked, the prize for best decorated will be awarded. Healthy Rivers Partnership and the Kansas City Fire Department will be on hand with rescue vessels and support to ensure it’s a fun, safe day for everyone.

Lucid Illusion, led by queer artists Matthew Loyd, Jac Danger, and Kimmon Smutz, specializes in immersive art experiences. Their collaboration with Healthy Rivers Partnership, a non-profit that connects communities to their local rivers, aims to bring attention to the Missouri River’s significance in Kansas City.

The two groups hope this event ushers in a new age for KC’s rivers as places of community, art, and fun. They also hope to highlight that the river is open to the public, and to showcase the many unique ways Kansas Citians can utilize it to garner a sense of togetherness.
