Braunschweiger is easy to find, if you look in the right places

I was chided by more than a few people for stating, in my review of Limestone Pizza Kitchen Bar in Lawrence, that I didn’t think I had ever seen Braunschweiger on a menu before. (It’s a tasty bar snack at Limestone.) I ate a lot of the soft smoked-pork liverwurst as a kid because our neighborhood delicatessen in Indianapolis, Sam’s Subway, sold it.

“There’s a braunschweiger mousse on the Happy Hour menu at the Rieger Hotel Grill and Exchange,” said commenter Patrick.

I wondered, reading that, if Grunauer restaurant in the Crossroads offered it (and according to an employee I spoke with there – no). While not a restaurant – I’m excluding Pigwich from the conversation – the Local Pig butcher shop will, according to one employee, “make it as a special order.” Werner’s Fine Sausages in Mission carries it (it wasn’t in stock when I called) but doesn’t make it. “We order it out of Chicago,” I was told. McGonigle’s Meat Market in south Kansas City almost always has Braunschweiger in stock, a first-rate Boar’s Head product from Florida.

There is at least one saloon in the metro that sells a really good Braunschweiger sandwich: Breit’s Stein and Deli at 412 North Fifth Street in Kansas City, Kansas. It costs $4.50 and can be served on your choice of bread.
