Darling at Sea

Normally, it’s door-draw suicide for a local group to play several shows in the area within a short timespan. However, when one of the events is something bigger than the band, such as the Brick’s New Year’s Eve bash, it’s entirely understandable for a group to double-dip into the concert calendar. Darling at Sea won’t exactly rile up December 31 revelers next week, given that it specializes in luxuriously somnolent sounds. Initially the world’s softest three-guitar group, the Kansas City quartet lost an axman in January. Now the delicate dual-guitar lines intertwine behind Travis Wears’ compelling voice, and a subtle rhythm section grounds the airy melodies. At times, Darling at Sea resembles a keyboardless Namelessnumberheadman — an accomplishment because few groups lacking synthesizers can create such ambience. The group will gig even more frequently after releasing its debut EP next spring, but that shouldn’t constrict its crowd; Darling’s sets are hazy dream worlds into which listeners, once roused, can’t wait to become re-immersed.
