Brad Lynn, 2013 Kansas City Rugged Maniac winner, answers The Pitch‘s questionnaire

Name: Brad Lynn
Occupation: Police sergeant
Hometown: Kansas City, Missouri
Current neighborhood: Kansas City North
What I do: I am a police sergeant and also perform magic shows for special events. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my wife and four children, working out and running obstacle-course races.
What’s your addiction? Anything sugar. I have always had a sweet tooth.
What’s your game? Football. I enjoy playing and watching my Kansas City Chiefs.
What’s your drink? Dr Pepper or Mountain Dew
Where’s dinner? Mostly at home, but my wife and I have a thing for Chipotle.
Finish this sentence: “Kansas City got it right when …” They made the improvements to the downtown district. It’s a night-and-day difference from what it used to be. I feel like it’s a safer and prettier place to be now.
“Kansas City screwed up when …” They couldn’t get the Kansas City, Missouri, School District under control. It is upsetting that they lost their accreditation and are not providing better options for those students enrolled in the district who want to succeed. I know this has something to do with the clientele itself, but there have to be other changes out there that could make this district more successful.
“Kansas City needs …” A decent baseball or football postseason.
“I’ve been known to binge-watch …” American Ninja Warrior episodes.
“I can’t stop listening to …” Toby Mac. He’s an excellent artist and always has a positive message.
“I just read …” Trail Runner magazine, Men’s Health magazine — anything longer than that usually won’t keep my attention.
My sidekick: My wife and kids. They put up with my silliness, crazy schedule and race adventures. They support me and help me out along the way.
My dating triumph/tragedy: I went to prom and accidentally fell asleep while we were waiting for the after-party. We’ve been together ever since.
My 140-character soapbox: I attended a book/Bible study a few years ago that highlighted the epidemic of living a “half life” — meaning that a lot of adults will live through others or their children. They always talk about the “good old days” and the things they “used to do.” I challenge those individuals to get out there and do what they love or “used to love.” Stop living a half life. Enjoy your life. Reach out to your old friends. Have a good time with your family. Get out there and make a difference!
My recent triumph: Last fall, after many months of training, I finished first place in the Rugged Maniac obstacle race. It was very cool to win the competitive heat, and I had a great time running it!
Lynn makes another run at first place when Rugged Maniac returns to the Snow Creek Ski Area (1 Snow Creek Drive, Weston, Missouri) August 9. See ruggedmaniac.com for more info.
