Hot Doggin’ It

What sporting event on July 4 is nearly 100 years old and draws more than a million viewers and attendees? Why, the largest eating competition in the world, of course — Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. To get to the big-time chow-down at Coney Island, wannabe champs must compete in qualifying regional contests. One of those happens today at the Sam’s Club in Overland Park (8300 West 135th Street, 913-402-1405). The two-hour event starts at 11 a.m. with music and giveaways. Things heat up at noon when local amateurs compete in a five-minute contest for a trophy. At 12:15 p.m., the professional eaters, including Jim Reeves of New York and hometown hero Kyle Long of Olathe, will gorge themselves for a coveted spot at the July 4 competition. It’s drama, intensity and — oh, yes — lots of hot dogs. Spectators can enjoy a Nathan’s hot dog with a drink in a commemorative cup for $1.50.
