It’s now official: The Manliest Restaurant in America is — drum roll, please — The Hilltop Inn in Evansville, Indiana. The restaurant was chosen by the manly ol’ AOL website asylum.com which claims it chose the Indiana joint from a list of potential contenders because it served a fried brain sandwich. The editor of the blog, Neil Gladstone, wrote: “No doubt we must pause and acknowledge the fried brain sandwich’s part in this triumph. There’s definitely something about mashing up something’s brain, frying it in a pan and dropping it on a bun that’s guaranteed to put hair on your chest.”
I’m not convinced that a fried brain sandwich will put hair on any diner’s chest — or anywhere else for that matter — but if you consider yourself manly enough to taste one, the venerable Clem’s Drive-In in Independence serves a hell of a pork brain sandwich. I guess you could call Clem’s pretty manly, but doesn’t have anywhere near the testosterone level of the clientele at Ruby’s Dagwood’s Cafe on Southwest Boulevard — where you can still smoke a Marlboro with your eggs and bacon.
