Tipping on to go orders

Are you supposed to tip when you pick up carry-out?

For some people, a tip might be hard to justify. The order isn’t being brought to your table or delivered to your door, and the hostess or bartender who presents you with your order might only be involved in the sales portion of the transaction. In addition, you can certainly have tipper’s remorse — you’re rewarding service without necessarily checking that your order is correct. Carryout also feels closer to other retail transactions — you hand over cash in exchange for a good.

But sometimes it feels wrong not to tip. So, do you tip if your order is ready or withhold a tip if it’s not? What about when they offer you free condiments — like the grated parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes at Waldo Pizza?
