You can’t tell by the packaging. And you certainly shouldn’t go buy what the salesman in housewares tells you. But everyone has had one great appliance in their lives.

The Kinghorn family of Edinburgh, Scotland, offers perhaps the most startling proof of that corollary. The Daily Telegraph reports that Kinghorns are still using a 75-year-old Frigidaire refrigerator. It was one of the last models to be built without a light, but — as Rosemary Kinghorn points out — it still keeps food cold.
