Celebrate National Tequila Day at these local drinking holes

Today is National Tequila Day, a day that I personally like to celebrate with all the enthusiasm of a child at Christmas. As if any of us needed an excuse to have a margarita or eight on a Friday afternoon. In case you need help selecting a destination for post-work imbibing, we have here compiled a short list of some of the most tequila-friendly bars around — so friendly, in fact, that they are running special deals in honor of this hallowed day.
The press release that Zócalo sent out says the Plaza restaurant will be offering $4 Patrón Silver “sippers” and $5 Patrón Reposado “sippers” all day, which I assume is a classy way of saying “SHOTS!”
If you’re not the tequila-shootin’ type — which, you know, fine, we all make choices in life — you can make any of the sippers a margarita or cocktail for $1 extra. Also, live entertainment: DJ Perry will be on deck from 10 p.m. to close.
Technically, El Patrón’s happy hour today is no different from what it is every Friday, with margaritas and mojitos for $3.99 from 2 to 6 p.m. But with seemingly endless flavor options for frozen margs (and some of the best ceviche around), you should probably work this in.
Westport’s Port Fonda is knocking a few dollars off their tequila flights today and Saturday: $1 off Flight 01 (blanco), $2 off Flight 02 (reposado) and $3 off Flight 03 (añejo).
When I called, Port Fonda also gave me the features that they’ll be running today and Saturday, and they sound so good.
– Casamigos Blanco hamachi crudo, grapefruit, avocado, spiced quinoa
– Cazadores Añejo-marinated pork tenderloin, kale, peaches, sweet onion
– Shortcake, Eatin’ Eden blackberries, Casa Noble añejo cream
Despite its name, Drunken Worm’s National Tequila Day special is perhaps the least dangerous on this list. The Volker restaurant and bar is offering $3 Cafe Patrón XO shots all day. If you haven’t had this, it’s basically Patrón’s answer to Kahlúa: A coffee-infused tequila liqueur that, I’ve found, goes best inside a cup of coffee. Drunken Worm opens up at 11 a.m.
Master barman Berto Santoro at Extra Virgin has developed a special cocktail for National Tequila Day: a blueberry-cilantro margarita with Tequila Ocho Single Estate Tequila for $8. He’s also using the opportunity to get tequila drinkers turned on to mezcal: There will be a $15 mezcal flight, featuring selections from both Del Maguey and Mezcal Vago.
If you happen to be in the Prairie Village area, know that Salty Iguana is offering $5 Gold Margaritas all day, from 11 a.m. to close. It’s the same special that it runs every Friday, actually, but what a delightful coincidence, right?
This list is not comprehensive — merely a beginner’s guide to enjoying the day. If you have suggestions, please utilize our comments section. Happy drinking!
If you’re a tequila fan, you should probably check out The Pitch‘s Margarita Wars, held this year on Friday, August 7, at the Waldo Pavilion. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a bunch of rad restaurants serving up their most inventive margs. Get your tickets here.
