Would a ‘pay what you can’ restaurant work in KC?

The regular restaurant rules don’t apply at a few Panera Bread locations. The Panera Cares Cafes — in Portland, Oregon; Dearborn, Michigan; and Clayton, Missouri — are using a donation-only payment approach.
The idea of “pay what you can” means that while there is a suggested retail value for menu items, it’s up to each diner to decide what to actually pay. Panera founder Ronald Schaich told The Christian Science Monitor that 60 percent of the customers pay the retail value, with 20 percent paying either more or less.
