Football is back and other weekend possibilities

  • It’s been too long, chicken wings.

It’s not pretty to watch fans go through football withdrawal. Beer loses its taste. Chicken wings have no spice. And pretty soon, they’re trying to run a play with the family dog in the backyard. Well that all ends at 7 p.m. Friday, August 12, when the Kansas City Chiefs take the field against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Arrowhead Stadium. If you’re looking to celebrate the return of football with fellow addicts — um, fans — then there are plenty of options other than your couch. The pregame is at the Power & Light District as the outdoor Living Room space has $1 domestics and $2 craft beers from 4 to 7 p.m. Then grab a Saucy Chick ($9), a two-handed barbecue-chicken sandwich smothered in pepper-jack cheese, grilled onions and bacon from McFadden’s Sports Saloon (1330 Grand). If you definitely want a good view, the Sports Cave Bar & Grill (11440 W. 135th St., in Overland Park) has $3.25 Boulevard pints and more than 30 televisions. And if it’s lighter fried fare you want, the fried dill pickles at Harpo’s (4109 Pennsylvania) in Westport will be gone before the first timeout. The lockout is over, kids. We made it.
