Everyone hates one dessert … what’s yours?

“What’s wrong with you?” my late Sicilian-American father once screamed at me — I was 5 years old, by the way — in front of all the customers in a busy Italian restaurant. “Everyone loves spumoni. It’s un-American not to like spumoni.”

So blacklist me! I have never liked spumoni. I never will. They say children will eat almost anything sweet. Not me. I drew the line at spumoni very early on. But why? It’s a classic Italian delicacy: two layers of flavored ice cream sandwiched on either side of a layer of sweetened whipped cream, often flavored with rum, nuts or candied fruit. In America, the dessert is usually much less complicated: It’s just three layers of ice cream, typically strawberry or cherry, pistachio and chocolate.

Yesterday — or Sunday, depending on which calendar you’re consulting — was National Spumoni Day. Once again, I celebrated it by not eating spumoni.
