Are you going to the American Royal?

  • You can’t just take any old bus to the American Royal.

The arrival of the American Royal has always felt like the fifth season to me. I catch glimpses of rodeo clowns and out-of-state trucks pulling smokers on hitches and I get a real itch to cook a massive slab of meat. It seems I’m not alone in my craving for ‘cue. The Chicago Tribune recently excerpted portions of Michael and Jane Stern’s new eating travelogue, “The Lexicon of Real American Food.” In the new book about the specialties and regional eats of this country, there’s a section on “brownies (not the dessert we were searching for yesterday):”

Brownies: These bits of barbecue are also known as burnt ends. According to the Sterns, brownies are a specialty of Kansas City barbecue joints. You can get brownies and chili together at the Woodyard Bar-B-Que, 3001 Merriam Lane, Kansas City, Kan.; 913-362-8000; woodyardbbq.com.

So, will you be on the look out for brownies or other barbecue this weekend at the American Royal?
