Baseball had its moment as our national pastime, and Budweiser is still trying to be our national beer, but when it comes to a national food, the jury is still out. Family Feud thinks the potential contenders include pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries. Wikipedia adds apple pie and roast turkey to the mix. And the last remaining pillar of the Everyman, network television, rendered its verdict recently.

In a comedic homage to Hands Across America, Jimmy Fallon last week attempted to stretch Subway subs across America. Commercialism aside, it’s a testament to just how far the profile of the humble hoagie has risen. Are sandwiches our national food?
