Burger Week down to last 48 hours

After tonight, you have just 48 more hours to enjoy Burger Week — $5 burgers from 16 different restaurants, bars and grills in the metro — a promotion sponsored by The Pitch. And no, it’s not a contest — I haven’t tasted a loser.

My problem is deciding which venue to try for the Burger Week sandwiches I haven’t tasted yet. I still have two days and a night, you know. And for less than $20, I could eat nothing but burgers until Monday.

I’m eager to sample the Sweet Cheeses Burger, the $5 offering from the Red Door Grill (11852 Roe, Leawood) which has a lot going for it: a custom-blend, from McGonigle’s Market, of beef brisket, short rib and chuck tenderloin, topped with Swiss and cheddar cheeses and a grilled cheese fritter. Oh, and thick-cut bacon and sriracha mayo.

Cheese — macaroni and cheese, that is — is the unusual component of two inventive Burger Week choices. The Courthouse Exchange (113 West Lexington Avenue, Independence) is serving a $5 Bacon Mac ‘n’ Cheese Burger, made with a half-pound grilled beef patty topped with strips of bacon, macaroni and cheese, shredded cheddar, and barbecue sauce. Bib, anyone?

In South Kansas City, Charlie D’s Seafood & Chicken (600 East 99th Street) is doing its own spin on this theme, topping its Angus patty with macaroni and cheese, American and Swiss, and bacon. They call it the Bacon Burger Mac Stack. A friend of mine who has eaten one just calls it “a cheese explosion.”

Smoked Gouda and cheddar cheeses (but no pasta) are two of the elements in the Hickory Burger at Charlie Hooper’s (12 East 63rd Street, in Brookside), which also heaps a beef patty with bacon, fried onion rings and barbecue sauce on a pretzel bun.

Ophelia’s (201 North Main Street, Independence) offers a Havarti Burger — the cheese on it being that sumptuously creamy Danish kind. Also atop the beef: crispy pork belly, caramelized red onion, wilted spinach and a dab of lemon thyme aioli. At $5, this sandwich is a steal.

Bleu Burgers (320 Southwest Blue Parkway, Lee’s Summit) is all about burgers, particularly beef patties stuffed with delectable ingredients. For $5, diners get the hefty Bacon Pesto Burger, where the interior of the grilled beef patty has a filling of roasted red peppers, mozzarella and bacon. This is topped with more mozzarella and basil pesto.

A beautiful burger is something to behold. But a good deal doesn’t last forever. Burger Week lasts until this Sunday, October 25. Stick a five-note in your pocket and go.
