Cicada ice cream gets things hot at a Columbia ice-cream shop

Most restaurants strive to keep bugs out of the food, but one Columbia ice-cream shop had a very different idea. KMBC reports that Columbia public health officials have advised Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream to not make a second batch of cicada-flavored ice cream because there aren’t any city or county guidelines governing the proper preparation of bugs for consumption. Sparky’s…

One less local pie: Pizza Oven closes

The family-owned Pizza Oven, a small pizzeria at 80th and State Line, has closed. The restaurant’s website puts it very simply: “Closed for business.” When the restaurant opened, in December of 2008, owners Kevin and Chris Ferrel were optimistic about their mom-and-pop pizza parlor, even if the location had a lousy track record: Before the Pizza Oven took it over,…

Closing in eight days: Madame Hatter’s Tea Room

When restaurateur Bonnie Freeland moved her dainty little tearoom, Madame Hatter’s Tea Room — which served surprisingly delicious lunches and fabulous desserts —  from Eudora, Kansas, to bigger quarters in Bonner Springs in 2009, it seemed like a positive development. But apparently not: Freeland is closing her business on June 15. She’s keeping her fans notified on the restaurant’s Facebook…

Chubby’s on Barry is now open, but not serving so late

Chubby’s on Broadway is something of a midtown institution: It’s one of the few 24-hour diners left in the heart of the city. The newest version of the LaBruzzo family’s iconic restaurant is Chubby’s on Barry at 6332 N.W. Barry Road, a sparkling clean and shiny diner that Vince Frew opened two weeks ago. Frew is part of the extended…

Sleigh Bells and Neon Indian, last night at the Midland

Decided to walk up the street after work last night to see what kind of crowd Sleigh Bells and Neon Indian would draw on a Monday at the Midland. A big crowd, it turns out — a big, young, attractive crowd wearing bright, progressive outfits. Last night was a make-up show, from when Sleigh Bells canceled on the Buzz Stole…

Sam Brownback to join Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s gubernatorial prayer army

%{}% Texas Gov. And Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback was quick to sign up for the August 6 event. Perry is teaming up with the American Family Association, a Mississippi-based…

Keith Olbermann calls for Billy Long to resign for mocking the tornado alert system

Last week, Countdown’s Keith Olbermann called for U.S. Congressman Billy Long to “resign in shame” after mocking tornado warning systems and proposing selling off ham radio frequencies. Long’s congressional district in Missouri includes Joplin, which was leveled by an EF5 tornado that a few weeks ago killed 141 people. Too soon, man. Too soon. Olbermann, who is preparing for the…

An Info Gates track to make you go unghhh

But in the opposite-day world of hip-hop, where sick means fresh, “unnnghhh” is the sound of approval. So it’s appropriate that a “that’s so sick” groan is mixed into the production on “Am I Right or Am I Right?” the track featuring singer Reggie B that appears on rapper Info Gates’ latest album, The Life of the Mind.  Categories: Music…

Bubba Starling has a decision to make: Sign a multimillion-dollar contract with the Kansas City Royals or go to college and play football and baseball for the University of Nebraska. The Royals selected the hometown hero yesterday with the fifth pick in Major League Baseball’s draft. But the 6-foot-5, 195-pound center fielder from Gardner Edgerton High School had already committed…
