How every beer should be poured at The K (video)

The Bottoms Up draft beer dispenser can fill up to 44 pints in a single minute — earlier this year, Wired succintly explained how the machine that fills beer cups from the bottom works. Here’s it in action (captured by Flickr user Scottcolsen) at Kauffman Stadium, where even though it’s only filling a single beer, it’s no less impressive.   …

Anthony Standifer convicted of shooting Beverly Crowl in the head, killing her in botched robbery

The sheer stupidity of Kansas City’s criminal class is frightening. On Friday, Anthony Standifer was convicted of shooting a retired Independence Police Department records clerk in the head, killing her in March 2010. This is one of those murders that truly never had to happen but did, due to incompetent criminals. Standifer, 26, showed up at Beverly Crowl’s home, which…

The five ways you can survive a Groupon apocalypse

Groupon is the Internet version of an impulse purchase in the checkout line. You’ve got a limited time window (24 hours), a limited deal (some percentage off) and a pithy description of food that is definitely enticing. While it’s easy to click ‘purchase,’ it can sometimes be far harder to remember to redeem your Groupon. And this leads to a…

Sushi Mido opens in Shawnee

Shawnee might just be the best spot in town to get a plate of sashimi. Sushi Mido (6010 Nieman) opened at the beginning of this month, only a dozen blocks from the Sakura Japanese Restaurant (7474 Nieman).  Sushi Mido is in the former Asian Breeze space, and just like the Japanese-Chinese fusion of the former occupant, it has a few…

Kansas’ concealed-carry law among the ‘Craziest Gun Laws,’ gun control group says

Kansans, your state has one of the “craziest gun laws” in the nation. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence bestowed the dubious honor on the Sunflower State “for allowing guns in K-12 schools,” the Wichita Eagle reported. If that sounds crazy, well, it’s possible. Chuck Sexson, the director of the concealed-carry program for the Kansas Attorney General’s Office, acknowledged…

What’s the most that a restaurant should charge for a Coke?

Soft drinks are like concessions for restaurants because our addiction to a bit of colored corn syrup can help an establishment’s struggling profit margins. But the line between gouging and gorging is a fine one.  Serious Eats recently stumbled into a $5 bottle of Mexican Coca-Cola at David Chang’s Duck Lunch in New York City. (Last week, chef Alex Pope…

Everyone is going to be late for work today …

Heads up, downtown Kansas City employers. Your workers are probably going to be late today. The streets were total gridlock around 8 a.m., making a usual five-minute drive from my lair at 11th and Broadway a nearly 20-minute drive. The photo above doesn’t do justice to how bad it was. Nevertheless, we’re back for this short week. Categories: News

Money Shots: Team Bear Club’s party at the Union on Saturday

, I checked out Lawrence collective Team Bear Club’s new monthly at the Union. By the time I turned up, somebody had already vommed their face off and the stench had spread out across the cavernous basement area, particularly near the bar area. But apart from that, the vibe of the party was on point.  Greg Enemy rapped a few numbers, Dutch…

Janelle Monae and Bruno Mars turn it up at the Independence Events Center

Supposedly, the Uptown Theater had to refund a ton of tickets after Janelle Monae and Bruno Mars’ Hooligans in Wondaland show got moved to the Independence Events Center. Hiking out to Independence on a Saturday night was apparently a bridge too far for certain midtowners.  Well, they missed a hell of a show. In fact, the blandness of the Independence Events Center —…
