Hessam Ghane’s cyanide is going to get him eight years and a month in federal prison without parole. Ghane, a 60-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen from Iran, was convicted in December of possessing a chemical weapon — cyanide — that he kept under his kitchen sink. Prosecutors presented evidence at trial that Ghane possessed 177 grams of potassium cyanide, which is…

February openings and closings in the Kansas City restaurant scene

dvs February was a positive month for restaurant growth: no real closings! Because February officially ushered in “The Year of the Rabbit,” according to Chinese astrology, we were interested to see if the omens would be good for a year that promised “prosperity, health and fortune.” So far, indications look promising for 2011. Ron Marts’ career as a funeral director in Missouri is scheduled to come to an end on March 11. Jackson County Circuit Court Judge J. With the revocation back in place, Marts was ordered to cease…

Karen Errington, local actress, died early Tuesday morning

Local actress and singer Karen Errington died this morning after a several-month battle with breast cancer, The Kansas City Star’s Robert Trussell reported. Errington was 49. Trussell does a better job than I can of recapping Errington’s theater career, in which she worked for just about every company in town (the Unicorn, the American Heartland, the New Theatre, Kansas City…

Emergency ban on chemicals in fake pot starts today

An emergency one-year ban on five of the chemicals used to make fake pot (also known as K2, Spice, and a hundred other names) goes into effect today, so take notice that you may now, in fact, be riding dirty. You had plenty of warning. Besides statewide bans on certain types of fake pot in Kansas and Missouri, this emergency…

Nina Ward wants you to spread her dips

I wouldn’t say that the Cosentino’s Brookside Market is doing an exactly stellar job in displaying the locally made food products created by former restaurateur Nina Ward (her family owned the Jose’s Mexican restaurants in Johnson County back in the 1980s). I only discovered her Raspberry Jalapeno Dip and Luscious Lemony Cheesecake Fondue when my shopping cart veered into a…

Mac Lethal tackles Charlie Sheen (and his tiger blood)

By now you’ve heard that Charlie Sheen isn’t bi-polar. He’s just bi-winning. Mac Lethal has heard, and he has turned it into a rap. It’s called “Tiger Blood: Charlie Sheen Wins,” and it includes a mash-up of Sheen’s interview quotes. (Mac also takes a second to mime snorting a line before unleashing his signature speed-rapping about Sheen’s bizarre interview.) Categories:…

Kansas City Star‘s less-for-more business strategy faulted

College instructor and local media critic John Landsberg announced yesterday that he has given up his Kansas City Star habit. Writing on his blog, Landsberg says he can no longer be a “loyal customer” of a company that raises the price of a product that has fallen in quality. The Star loses subscribers every day, many of them to the…

Wendell Woods’ streak of being a disruptive dick at the federal courthouse is alive

Wendell Woods didn’t make any friends during his sentencing hearing Monday at the federal courthouse, especially with U.S. District Judge Kathryn Vratil. According to the Star, Woods mouthed off to the judge — and that might get him sent away for a long, long time. The 29-year-old reportedly pleaded guilty in September to assaulting security officers and deputy U.S. marshals…
