The parade of depravity continues. Wichita police suspect a 22-year-old man of stabbing and killing his grandmother, Gertrude Lott, Thursday morning. Lott, 69, was stabbed repeatedly in the torso with several different weapons, the Wichita Eagle reported. Lt. Ken Landwehr told the Eagle that Lott’s 22-year-old grandson is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder. Killing grandma is about as…

She told authorities that “Randy” did this to her. The child was taken to a local hospital where she underwent surgery for her injuries. Categories: News Tags: Randy…

The Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup Martini is a meal you can drink (but should you?)

The chef-inspired cocktail is not a new phenomenon, but liquefying the essence of a sandwich might be taking the concept to the next level. The New York Times’ T Magazine featured the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup Martini recently, which is served at Clive’s in Victoria, British Columbia. Could this be the beginning of a curious trend of comfort drinks?…

Kansas Chamber of Commerce decides tax on working people isn’t so bad

Republican lawmakers in Kansas, who balanced the 2010 budget by approving a temporary 1-percent increase in the state sales tax, felt the hot breath of the state’s right-wing element. The Kansas Chamber of Commerce recruited candidates to oppose moderates who supported the tax increase, leading to criticism that the organization pursued an agenda narrow enough to put in a mail…

Valentine’s Day dining: The good, the bad and the ugly

It’s all about happy endings, right? One of my favorite Valentine’s memories is of the night I was working in a restaurant, trying not to lose my mind over the owner’s decision to offer one of the most ridiculous prix fixe packages ever conceived. (I can’t recall the actual menu, but there was a bottle of really cheap sparkling wine…

Congrats, y’all: Five KC acts that are playing SXSW’s official showcase

Capybara is playing South by Southwest’s official showcase in Austin, which is kind of a big deal. Drawing acts from around the world, the event’s official showcase features hundreds of acts on nearly 80 stages. But plenty of unofficial audiences are up for grabs during SXSW week, when Austin keeps label reps, bloggers and music journalists elbow to elbow with…

John McClure interview, Part 3: The Tomahawk Chop isn’t just at Arrowhead Stadium

He doesn’t make candlesticks (yet), but Starker’s owner and executive chef John McClure is at ease both butchering and baking. The son of a cattle rancher and former 4-H baker talked with Fat City this week about his experiences growing up in Tescott, Kansas, working as a Navy chef and discovering his passion for traditional Southern fare in New Orleans…

About those ‘Hopeless’ and ‘Unbelievable’ billboards around Kansas City

If you’ve driven to the airport recently, you may have noticed a couple of cryptic billboards with one-word messages: “Hopeless” and “Unbelievable.” Over at Reddit’s Kansas City page, there’s a little debate going on over what they might mean, including one fellow who says they’re “prototypes for a new type of neurally directed marketing.” Sadly, the truth is way less…

Ying Yang Twins get The Granada crunk this weekend

Lesser rappers are justified in their envy of the Ying Yang Twins’ “Halftime,” which has become the unofficial anthem for the New Orleans Saints. Unlike some one-hit, sports-arena wonders, though, the dirty rap duo from Atlanta has been a genuine hit maker for the past 10 years. (Among those successes are “What’s Happnin,” “Say I Yi Yi” and collabs with…

February is … Earthquake Awareness Month in Missouri?!

As if we didn’t have enough to worry about. In Missouri, February is the designated month in which state agencies want us to be preparing for a seismic event that, depending on whom you ask, is inevitable or impossible: a damaging earthquake along the New Madrid fault. The last “big one” happened in 1812. In a recent study, scientists monitored…
