Chelsea Handler is at Starlight again this summer

Remember when Chelsea Handler held her crotch to keep herself from peeing on Starlight’s stage this summer? Well, Kansas City wants more of that. Handler is back on June 19 at the outdoor venue, and she’ll be talking up her new book, Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me. We’re hoping that the title refers to all the weird shit she…

Less Than Jake’s show has ska — and love connections, onstage drinking contests, Uggs and Bud Light

Less Than Jake Saturday, February 12, 2011 The Granada Better than: Most crowds with this many leather jackets and Ugg boots. Less Than Jake’s major-label debut, Losing Streak, came out 15 years ago, meaning they’re a band to which I’ve been listening to literally half my life. They’ve aged better than the band’s other third-wave compatriots, owing as much to…

Why we’re not going to cover your write-in campaign

Reporters who cover politics are, by and large, hypocrites. We complain about establishment figures and good-ol’-boy networks and politicians who wouldn’t recognize an original thought if it jammed a lapel pin in their eye. But when election season rolls around, we run like hell from third-party candidates and other outsiders. Mounting a write-in campaign? Write someone who cares. I’m not…

Rasheed Shakur, ‘the Michael Corleone of Kansas City,’ guilty in multimillion-dollar drug-trafficking conspiracy

Rasheed Shakur liked to think of himself as “the Michael Corleone of Kansas City.” The 42-year-old, who also used the alias “Charles G. Cook,” had a taste for expensive shopping trips in Beverly Hills stores. He’d spend $300 on a bandanna or drop $700 on a pair of shoes. Jewelry was even more expensive (anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000). Shakur…

Preservationists cling to tax breaks as Missouri goes broke

Developers, architects and preservationists in Missouri want to protect historic tax credits. In Kansas City, the state program has subsidized the restoration of the Hilton President Hotel, the Mainstreet Theater and other downtown projects. Everybody likes to see old buildings come back to life. But the program, which drained $108 million from last year’s budget, is one of the reasons…

Bruno Mars gave me a silk scarf

I am obsessed with Hawaii. Many childhood trips to paradise have pretty much ruined me for any other vacation destination and have given me a sometimes embarrassing soft spot for anything Hawaii-related. Jack Johnson. Tropical designs for my car seat covers, checkbook, shower curtain. Any movie that’s set on the islands. And now there’s Bruno Mars. It’s not uncommon knowledge…

David Glass says he is ‘obsessed with winning.’ Wait, what?

Although it might be hard to believe, as the city does its best impression of a cryogenic freezer, Kansas City Royals’ spring training begins next week. Which, of course, means that it’s time for team officials to start bloviating (lying) about what a wonderful season is in store for the team faithful. Kicking off the preseason period of morale boosting…

Valentine’s Day is around the corner, so along with a prix fixe meal and a box of chocolates, you’re probably expecting to get laid. But let us be the first to tell you that while V-Day comes but once a year, a VD is forever (or, at least, mildly uncomfortable until you can get proper treatment). That’s something the following…
