Kansas City police officers to be annoyed into wearing seatbelts
Kansas City police officers will now have to wear their seatbelts or be annoyed by a never-ending beeping alarm. The Star reported that police mechanics no longer will be allowed to disable the alarms, which beep until officers buckle up. This comes after last week’s do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do news that some officers don’t click it but don’t get tickets. Deputy Police Chief…
Annedore’s has the rarest chocolate, but you can’t taste it … yet
A month ago, The New York Times reported on a discovery made two years ago of a rare cacao tree, the Nacional, in Peru. The Nacional was thought to be extinct after pure varieties of the tree had succumbed to disease in Ecuador — the world’s largest producer of cacao. The chocolate made from Nacional cacao beans is also rare…

Tommy Morrison, HIV-infected former heavyweight champ, is officially crazytown
So far, HIV hasn’t done too much damage to former heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison’s body. But the disease — or perhaps years of having his brain smashed against his skull — has taken its toll on his mind. In his Sunday column, the Star’s Sam Mellinger checks in with the former Kansas City-based boxer, who’s now “training” in Wichita. Though…

Benjamin Elliott accused of spray painting the ‘n-word’ on Mizzou statue
The University of Missouri seems to have a problem with racist pricks. Benjamin Elliott is facing charges of second-degree property damage, but the charges could be upped to a felony hate crime….
Rightbloggers welcome gay, Muslim diversity at CPAC — but not too much
%{}% The 2011 Conservative Political Action Cnference (CPAC), held last week, was in some respects like the previous year’s: For example, everyone loved that the place was full of young people, until the kids gave libertarian Ron Paul their straw poll vote. There were some changes, though. Perhaps hoping to convince people in preparation for a 2012 Obama challenge they…
“December Hunting for Vegetarian Fuckface,” and other particularly long-winded, weird song titles
Sometimes, song titles are short, succinct subject lines. There are many, many bands with tracks called “Love,” “Rock and Roll,” “Take Me Away,” “Come Together,” etc. But then there are those songs whose titles are original and distinct. Here’s a review of some of our favorites. Categories: Music Tags: Guided By Voices, rooftop vigilantes, Stars of the Lid, the flaming…
The scoop on Steddy P’s new album, What Happened Tomorrow
Steddy P, one of Killa City’s best independent rappers, has a new album coming out soon, awesomely titled What Happened Tomorrow. The free album drops March 15, and on his website you can watch some behind the scenes video of him working on it, which is pretty cool. Salty Iguana’s Tacos Azul show that blue corn should be on more menus around town
I didn’t grow up going to the Salty Iguana (8228 Mission) in Prairie Village, but once I had a kid, it was only a matter of time before I ate there. It’s the Fritz’s Railroad of Mexican restaurants. Because I’m coming to the Salty Iguana later in life, I’m likely discovering what many of you already know. Iguana murals…

Cupcake A La Mode, not Sprinkles, will be the first Plaza cupcake shop
Despite a yearlong rumor that Sprinkles (its website continues to list Kansas City as a “coming soon” possibility) might be headed to the Plaza, it won’t be the first cupcake shop in Kansas City’s signature shopping district. The Kansas City Business Journal reports that Cupcake A La Mode will move, likely in early April, from its current location at 1209…
Have you seen this guy? He’s suspected of shooting up a KCK business
The guy on the right is being called a “person of interest” after someone shot up a Kansas City, Kansas, business last Thursday afternoon. The shooting took place in the middle of the day — 2 p.m. — in the 1400 block of North 10th Street. Luckily, no one was injured. But people were inside the business. Police are saying…
Pot Sauce Williams: Introducing weed-infused barbecue sauce
In a city known for smoking, you would think that we would have invented the art of infusing our barbecue sauce with marijuana. But that honor, as Fat City intern Emily Johnson discovered, belongs to Hot Sauce Williams, a Cleveland barbecue restaurant that is opening a second location in Colorado to sell pot-infused barbecue sauce to medial marijuana users ….
Josh Groban is coming to the Sprint Center in May
Raise Josh Groban up on May 25. He’ll be at the Sprint Center, where your mother and her church friends will swoon every time he opens his mouth. (Disclaimer: I don’t think I’ve ever actually heard Josh Groban sing, because I somehow black out about 30 seconds into every one of his songs. He’s the crucifix; I’m the vampire. You figure…
How white is the Kansas City Police Department?
Last week, The Kansas City Star published all of the seven mayoral candidates’ plans to address violent crime. One of the hopefuls, attorney Sly James, voiced his opinion that the Kansas City Police Department needs more diversity on the force. It’s not the first time we’ve heard that sentiment. Which begs the question: How white is the KCPD, really? The…
Loretta Lynn stomped total ass at Ameristar on Saturday night
Loretta LynnSaturday, February 11, 2011Ameristar Pavilion Better than: Any other country starlet who will pack a venue in KC this year. (Eat your heart out, Taylor Swift.) When you’re lookin’ at me, you’re lookin’ at country, sang Loretta Lynn. Lynn smiled, and pointed to her chest coyly in her glittering, Glenda-the-Good-Witch princess dress. That line drew a swell of cheers…
