Yet another lawsuit alleging child abuse filed against Kansas City priests
At this point, it feels like there are almost as many lawsuits in Missouri charging priests with child abuse as there are saints’ days on the calendar. The latest one to be filed brings up some familiar names to anyone who has followed the history of these allegations against Kansas City’s Catholic leaders, naming Thomas O’Brien, Thomas Reardon and Michael…

Power & Light dress code lawsuit dismissed but could be refiled
A federal judge dismissed a class-action discrimination lawsuit against the Power & Light District’s owner, Cordish Co., after the plaintiffs failed to serve Cordish and other defendants, the Star reported. Yep, that’ll get your lawsuit tossed. However, the judge dismissed the lawsuit without prejudice, so the lawsuit can be refiled. Categories: News Tags: Cordish, Dress Code, Power & Light District,…

The MidCoast Takeover, Kansas City’s showcase at this year’s South by Southwest music festival, has released a 25-track album available for free download, featuring tracks from the acts that will be repping the KC-style in Austin this March. The album is anchored by local standards such as hits from the Appleseed Cast, Roman Numerals, and the Beautiful Bodies, but is…
Connie O’Brien, Kansas lawmaker, is sorry for her ability to spot an illegal
Kansas state Rep. Connie O’Brien (R-Tonganoxie) has really good eyesight. Like, so good, she can eyeball a person’s immigration status from across the room. It’s a neat party trick, but you probably shouldn’t trot it out during debate over repealing a state law that allows the children of illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates. Because then you just look…
Kansas City is the ninth most dangerous city; crime rate is more than three times the national average
This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who reads this blog: Kansas City is a dangerous place. Just how dangerous? Onboard Informatics dug through FBI crime stats from 2003 through 2009, and KC came out as the ninth most dangerous city in the United States. If that’s not bad enough, Kansas City’s crime risk is more than three times…

On both her…
Keighley Ann Alyea murder: Gerald Calbeck pleads guilty
Another man has pleaded guilty to his role in the killing of Keighley Ann Alyea. Gerald Calbeck pleaded guilty today to charges of second-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery. The 20-year-old’s plea follows the conviction of Alyea’s ex-boyfriend, Dustin Hilt, who was sentenced to a “Hard 50,” meaning he’ll be locked up for 50 years without a chance of…
Woodlands racetrack has an interested buyer if slots approved
The Woodlands racetrack in Kansas City, Kansas, once home to off-track betting and to live horse, greyhound and wiener dog racing, has been closed since 2008. Now Phil Ruffin, a wealthy businessman from Wichita, has acquired the option to buy the track. Still, the crux of the deal is held up by the same issue that caused the track’s current…
Sebadoh brushed off its indie gems last night at RecordBar
1994 was alive and well last night at RecordBar when seminal indie-rock band Sebadoh took to the stage and rocked out their album Bakesale in its entirety. Between long pauses of banter with the crowded audience, Sebadoh played their vintage songs as if they were fresh gems of rock, belting out the vocal lines and pounding out drum beats. Categories:…
Local cake-making star Mike Elder wants his own TV show
When it comes to baking and decorating cakes, Mike Elder is as close to a culinary star as a person can get in Clinton, Missouri. Or, closer to home, Kansas City — where Elder gets, he says, “99.9 percent of my business. I couldn’t survive if I was only making cakes for the residents of Clinton.” Fat City first introduced…
Justin Dougan pleads guilty to killing Spencer Crosthwait in drive-by shooting
Justin Dougan was fighting with a teenager over a girl. So he took his high-powered rifle and decided to hunt down the guy. But when he fired the rifle during a drive-by shooting, he shot and killed 17-year-old Spencer Crosthwait — the wrong guy. Dougan, 20, pleaded guilty today to charges of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon….
The five best cabbage dishes in Kansas City (it’s National Cabbage Day)
Today is “National Indian Pudding Day” and “National Cafe Au Lait Day.” But in Fat City, we’re most excited that it’s also National Cabbage Day. Both cabbage and its cousin kohlrabi have been cultivated for more than 2,000 years, and although the cabbage as a cooking staple is closely identified with Ireland, the wild variation of the plant, Brassica oleracea,…
Space beer will first be drunk on Earth by humans in Florida
An astronaut can’t live on Tang alone. She’s not going to use orange drink to toast a successful lunar walk or when she finally vanquishes the ship’s computer that is threatening to eject her out the airlock? No, she’s going to use space beer. 774 ABC Melbourne reports that 4 Pines Brewing Company is collaborating with space engineers to create…
David Stern, NBA commissioner, says Kansas City’s Sprint Center is perfect for a team, but …
NBA commissioner David Stern likes the Sprint Center. A lot. Pro basketball’s head honcho loves new buildings — that’s part of the reason that the Seattle SuperSonics are just a memory and Sacramento Kings fans sweat at the thought of moving vans rolling out of town. In Stern’s annual chat with ESPN’s basketball fanatic Bill Simmons, Stern didn’t hesitate to…

Guess where I’m eating a Chipotle Chicken Fiesta Sandwich? (Update)
Update: There were excellent guesses to this week’s “Where Am I Eating?” question, but all near misses. For the correct answer, read through to the bottom of the original post. The vintage china and the teacups probably give this mystery question away quickly, but where can you find this sandwich: a combination of sliced chicken breast topped with chipotle mayonnaise,…

Helmet can’t hang in Killa City. WTF?
The Metalliance Tour is coming to KC (specifically, Merriam), but it appears that the headliner, Helmet, will skip out on the March 28 date at Aftershock. I am still awaiting a reply as to why the feedback-heavy, “thinking person’s metal band” is choosing KC as the only city it won’t perform in. I’ll keep you hardcore motherfuckers updated. Kris Kobach: Arizona-style immigration bill will be introduced in Kansas today, will ‘very likely’ pass
%{}% Well, that didn’t take long at all: Less than two months into his tenure as Kansas secretary of state, illegal-immigration crusader Kris Kobach has already helped state lawmakers draft a knockoff of Arizona’s controversial immigration bill. Remember yesterday, when we told you how the Republicans’ stronghold in Topeka meant certain and swift death for the recently introduced medical-marijuana bill?…
