New (free!) Queens Club EP, Friendly

There’s a new free EP to be had, kids! Locals Queens Club released its new EP, Friendly, on its Facebook page for free. Which is friendly, indeed. (Har, har.) It includes two acoustic tracks, too. Categories: Music Tags: free shit, Queens Club

Boozefish to resume lunch, after a decade

It’s all about brunch in this week’s Cafe review, including the Saturday-only brunch served at Boozefish, the Westport wine bar and bistro. Starting in January, the restaurant’s brunch hours will change: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There’s a bigger change scheduled for Boozefish in the the new year as well: Lunch is coming back sometime in the spring of 2011….

Wanna try to save Streetside Records? You can!

After we broke the news that Streetside Records will be closing its doors forever in January yesterday, a lot of local music fans expressed sadness, disappointment and fear for the future of vinyl stores in Kansas City. Looks like a portion of them are also saying “Hell no!”, too. There’s a Facebook movement to save Streetside Records — and you…

How about a little Hippie Chow in the ol’ stocking?

The season to be jolly is here, so Fat City is looking around for holiday gift ideas, preferably the kind that can be eaten (or used to make something that can be devoured). In three weeks, local entrepreneur Valerie Jennings will be getting an unusual, belated holiday gift. She’ll officially leave her full-time job dealing with defaulted commercial mortgage loans…

Sex at work is not OK, says Missouri appeals court

Dashing the fantasies of “office porn” fetishists, the Missouri Court of Appeal has ruled that getting busy while on the clock is not OK. On Tuesday, the court affirmed a decision denying unemployment benefits to Calvin West Jr., according to Missouri Lawyers Media. Baldor Electric Co. fired West in 2009 for allegedly touching and kissing the breasts of a female…

EPA removes saccharin from list of hazardous substances

Crack open a can of Tab and celebrate — the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has removed saccharin from its list of hazardous substances. The EPA’s decision won’t determine whether saccharin does or does not appear in your chewing gum or low-calorie soda. The only likely change is in how the waste created by manufacturing the artificial sweetener must be handled….

Dale Helmig’s going home for Christmas, and boy, is Chris Koster pissed

Dale Helmig is home for the holidays. On Monday, the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, sustained a motion filed by Helmig’s attorneys to release Helmig on bond. Helmig was serving a life sentence at the Crossroads Correctional Center in Cameron, Missouri, for his mother’s murder. Last month, a judge in DeKalb County granted Helmig habeus corpus relief, finding that…

Kickstart Capybara’s second album

Remember Capybara? Sure, you do! Rumors circulated that the local band responsible for “The Wimp” had broken up this year, when Darin Seal’s solo project, Saharan Gazelle Boy, began to capture ears around the city. But all of that is by the wayside now: Capybara is back, and it’s asking for your help, Kansas City, to produce its second album. …

Documentary film project ends in name calling, defamation suit

Creative differences on an uncompleted documentary have led to a Kansas City woman being sued for defamation after she started a blog in which she calls a filmmaker a “despicable, haughty, typical Hollywood COCKROACH.” A dead dog pushed the collaboration toward its unhappy ending. The filmmaker, Melissa Kester, and the subject, Mary McGrannahan, discussed a project that would tell the…

Henry Rollins, Charles Manson: a match made in punk heaven

Henry Rollins shoots his mouth off about a lot of stuff — and that’s why we love him. (He rolls through Lawrence fairly frequently; read Ian Hrabe’s review of the man’s most recent spitballing at Liberty Hall here.) But: did you know that Rollins kinda bro’d down with famed serial killer Charles Manson, back in the day? Once upon a…

You know it’s brunch when…

Breakfast can be brunch, but brunch isn’t always breakfast. Brunch comes with liquor and pancakes and buffets in a dazzling array that is never as simple as one dish. The Pitch’s Charles Ferruzza reviews brunches around town in this week’s column. In an effort to define the meal, I have tried to compile a list of indicators that let you…

Rondell Ross accused of kidnapping his 18-month-old daughter

Tis the season for parents behaving badly. Few are allegedly acting as badly as Rondell Ross, who reportedly abducted his 18-month old daughter, Skyline Ross, a week ago. Skyline’s mother told police that she was holding her daughter in the driveway of her Grain Valley home when she was allegedly attacked by the 29-year-old Ross. The woman told police that…

Smallcakes to open in Lee’s Summit

Smallcakes is becoming kind of a big deal. The local cupcakery is set to open its third location, in Lee’s Summit, by the end of this year. And the new cupcake shop, in the Summit Fair development at Interstate 470 and U.S. Highway 50, will have a neighbor. The Kansas City Star reports that Yogurtini — a self-serve frozen yogurt…

Father, son dead in Lone Jack double shooting; murder-suicide suspected

The story of a father abandoning his 6-year-old son at a bus stop was sickening. Thankfully, it didn’t reach this tragic point: Police in Lone Jack are investigating a possible murder-suicide after a father and son were found shot to death Tuesday night. Fox 4 reported Wednesday morning that the dead were a father and son and police suspect a…

The 5 best (free) rap mixtapes of 2010

Until a few years ago, I don’t think I entirely understood that rappers — great rappers, even — had taken to making entire records and just giving them away on the internet, for free, calling them “mixtapes.” And that there were sites, like DatPiff and HipHopDX that consolidated the best of them. The internet is incredible.  Here are five free hip-hop albums…

Lenexa’s Tallgrass Toffee makes a sweet gift idea

The season to be jolly is here, so Fat City is looking around for holiday gift ideas, preferably the kind that can be eaten (or used to make something that can be devoured). There have been records of toffee candy sold in England dating back to the early 19th century. Randy Webb, the owner of Lenexa-based Tallgrass Toffee, says he’s…

The Sword slays at RecordBar tonight

You’ve got to wonder whether Black Sabbath feels flattered or annoyed that its music has become a standardized vocabulary for an entire genre of imitators. At this point, comparing the Sword with Sabbath is about as meaningful as saying the Austin, Texas, quartet uses electric guitars. Still, among the band’s galloping, fuzzy peers, the Sword’s strong songwriting foundation stands alone….

Cuban version of Wikipedia rips Harry Truman, lauds Ernest Hemingway

Cuba announced yesterday that they’ve created their very own version of Wikipedia. Well, more like a government-edited, propaganda-filled encyclopedia that Raul Castro tells people is like Wikipedia. It’s called Ecured, and it runs so slowly you will have flashbacks to waiting for AltaVista to load in 1995. But we endured the long wait to do little vanity search and find…

Streetside Records in Westport closing? (Update: Yes, it’s closing)

Rumor Mill hasn’t had a chance to formally investigate yet, but according to two separate, reliable sources, Streetside Records, one of the last independent record stores in the city, is set to announce its closing tomorrow. It’s especially sad news for those of us here at the Pitch — we were birthed in the Westport record store’s basement. UPDATE: It’s confirmed. I dropped…

Feds bury Border Patrol abuses of immigrants, but what’s been unearthed reveals a culture of cruelty

Anastasio Hernandez Rojas screamed in agony as U.S. border agents rained blows on him and delivered 50,000 volts of electricity to his body over and over. “No! No! Ayuda!” the 42-year-old Mexican wailed, pleading for help in Spanish. “Ayudenme !” It was late in the evening of May 28, and his cries could be heard throughout the San Ysidro border-crossing…
