Aretha cancels Power and Light concert, Chaka Khan to replace her

Aretha Franklin’s son was severely beaten in Detroit on Monday evening at a gas station by three people. It isn’t clear why the 52 year-old was attacked, but he was taken to the hospital immediately, and was released today after undergoing an emergency oral surgery, according to CNN.com.  That’s why Franklin has canceled her appearance at Power and Light tonight Sunday,…

Dexter McCluster says: ‘When, you’re on the road, don’t LOL’

Hey kids, Kansas City Chief Dexter McCluster has a special message for you: “Don’t text and drive.” DMC — that’s what he calls himself — thinks texting and driving is dangerous and serious. He’s a hands-at-10-and-two man from what I can tell. He’s written a rap about it, too. Like to hear it? Here it goes … Categories: News Tags:…

What happened to Lil’ Kim’s face?

First Dancing with the Stars, and now this? Kim seems to have come out of that conspiracy and perjury conviction with some unusual ideas about how to get back on top. May I suggest instead reassembling Junior M.A.F.I.A.? Just a thought.  Check out the rest of her spread in Kontrol magazine here. Depressing stuff.  Categories: Music Tags: lil kim, Lil’ Kim, terrifying

What’s Poppin’ Off: Magfuckingnificent performs The Cure’s trilogy

The RecordBar might not be Berlin’s Tempodrom, but that’s not stopping Magfuckingnificent from performing the albums Pornography (1982), Disintegration (1989) and Bloodflowers (2000) back-to-back over two nights in Westport. “It’s quite an undertaking,” says Byron Huhmann, frontman-and-Robert Smith impersonator. Mike Hardy hit by a car and $1,200 bike stolen … on his birthday

Mike Hardy has some shitty luck. Hardy was riding his bike to his girlfriend’s house on Saturday — his 27th birthday — a car plowed into him on Holmes Road around 4:10 p.m. Hardy was down in the street with both knees smashed and shredded. Three guys came over to check on him — then they turned their attention to…

Tuned Pale Ale sounds great after a few beers

Jug bands had a pretty good run last century. But with time comes innovation, and Tuned Pale Ale, based in Philadelphia, might just have given the world what it needs to enjoy some down-home bottle-blowing tunes (hat tip to the Urban Grocer). Thanks to a clever bottle design and musically inspired labeling, Tuned Pale Ale is an instrument masquerading as…

Jonathan Franzen: Great novelist, kind of a prick

The delicate literary genius banned photography, so here’s his book cover. Even with a spot on the bestseller list and a seat on Oprah’s couch, and even though he’s sort of a prick, I had to feel a little sorry for Jonathan Franzen last night during the author’s question and answer session at Unity Temple. Not that Franzen didn’t…

Poll: Do you pull ahead at the drive-through if asked?

Drive-throughs are essentially assembly lines. And just as workers can be judged by the piece count they produce in an hour, drive-through window tellers (and franchises) can be rated on how quickly you make it in and out of the drive-through. So when a drive-through attendant asks you to pull ahead and wait by the curb or in a parking…

The Beautiful Bodies’ secret show at the Brick last night

Wednesday night at the Brick had what every Wednesday night needs: beautiful bodies, and a little debauchery among friends. After an extended hiatus from live performances, local rockers the Beautiful Bodies re-emerged for a private, unpublicized concert. To judge by the crowd — 75 or so people who comfortably filled out the small venue with beers in-hand — the band…

Edgar Winter is at Knuckleheads tonight

Edgar Winter, scientologist, albino, brother of Johnny Winter, writer of “Frankenstein,” and jazz-gospel-blues-rocker, will be at Knuckleheads tonight. (Speaking of which: Have you read our cover story on Knuckleheads? Pshaw! Why, here it is.) You can meet and greet the experimental rocker for $50 before the show. (Ask him about his 1986 collaboration with L. Ron Hubbard, where he set Hubbard’s…

The house that madness built

Imaginary Movie Soundtracks are just that — the soundtracks to movies that don’t exist. We pick the songs, write the story, and your mind makes the movie. A haunted house story is always good for a spooky time. Be it the Haunting of Hill House, the Others, or the Orphanage, a house’s creaking floor joists can easily become the footsteps…
