In season: Blueberries

Blueberries are a summer grab bag. Some are tart. Some are sweet. And some are simply both. Right now could be the best time of year for blueberries. Picking season has started, although heavy rains could make for a smaller crop than in years past. Let’s get those jams, pies and pancakes started.  Categories: Dining, Food & Drink Tags: blueberries,…

Make a friggin’ deal already, Dayton Moore

We know Royals G.M. Dayton Moore can scout amateur talent. We know he can hire and fire a field manager. But does he know how to squeeze another general manager’s balls? The July 31 trading deadline looms. For the first time in a while, the Royals have several decent pieces to offer contending teams. It’s Moore’s job to make to maximize…

Those Darlins at RecordBar in September

The Darlins’ country-infused garage rock (or is it garage-infused country-rock?) is good, boozy fun, and it does not hurt matters that they also happen to be very sexy ladies. They’re like the wet dream of guys who subscribe to the Bloodshot Records mailing list. If you can’t make it to the RecordBar show, you can catch the band the following night, Friday,…

Breakfast Buffet: Tuesday, July 6

%{}% Some beers seem made for bar bets. Top among those might just be the Weston Brew Labs Hot Pepper Ale. Hell’s Kitchen contestant Holli Ugalde talks about cooking for chef Gordon Ramsay, reality television and porn. It’s not all protein gruel in space. One science-fiction-themed dinner shows off what it would be like to actually eat soylent green. Diet…

It’s True calling it quits

It’s True over. For a while there, Omaha’s It’s True was starting to feel a little like a local band. Seemed like it was bringing its sprawling, melodic rock jams to a venue in Kansas City, Lawrence, or Columbia every couple of weeks. The band even released a split 7″ record with Lawrence’s Cowboy Indian Bear a few months back. Things were looking…

Astrokitty Comics and three more places to go this week

Today: Feel the spirits. Or at least hear about them. Professional ghost hunter Beth Cooper will visit the Lawrence library to discuss her new book, which is a guide to Kansas ghosts. Wednesday: Drive a little out of the way for a good cinnamon roll. Van Till Farms’ homemade rolls are among the tastiest offerings at the Excelsior Spring Farmers’…

Kansas statehouse candidate Rob Bruchman will put his campaign sign in your yard even if you didn’t ask for one (updated)

In Johnson County, we’re used to candidates stealing their opponents’ signs. But this is the first time we’ve heard of a candidate putting signs in people’s yards without permission. Paul Hemenway says this happened to him a week ago Monday, when he found a Rob Bruchman sign in his front yard, near 97th Terrace and Nall. Categories: News, Politics Tags:…

Tweets of the Week

Kum & Go is the name of a convenience store that you’ll occasionally kum across when you venture out beyond the city limits. It appears as though Kum & Go has no intentions of changing its insane, perverse name. Instead, it is soliciting customer ideas for a rebranding of its soda fountain cup. The contest ended yesterday, and there are…

Remembering Clearly Nature’s Own

Before the little corner store at 4301 Main Street was the Whole Foods Market — which closed this week — it was the Wild Oats Market. Before that, it was a quaint, unique grocery called Clearly Nature’s Own for most of the 1980s and early 1990s. Before that, of course, the space had housed other businesses, including Dahoney’s Drug Store…

Ex-local sports stars’ jerseys: Pet Peeve No. 2

Let me begin by saying that I know pro-sports jerseys are expensive. But this gentleman in the Jared Allen jersey, who was spotted last Saturday night at the Riot Room in Westport, exemplifies classic, lazy-dude non-style. Gyro House vs. Papu’s Cafe: gyro vs. gyro

Street tacos are the lead singers here in Kansas City. Gyros are the roadies. They may not be as sexy, but you gotta have ’em. This week, we set Gyro House and Papu’s Cafe head to head. Charles Ferruzza and I roped in Pitch staffers to try lamb gyro sandwiches.  Categories: Dining, Food & Drink Tags: Gyro, Gyro House, lamb…

Ra Ra Riot at the Granada

You’ll remember Ra Ra Riot as one of those sunny, giddy New York bands that scenesters lost their shit over circa 2007. Well, they’re back, and apparently the band’s new album is supposed to be “so poppy you will want to throw up on yourself.” The rock quintet — comprised of singer Wes Miles, bassist Mathieu Santos, guitarist Milo Bonacci,…

Now you have plans for the weekend

You need plans. Fat City has a recycle bin full of listings. In this post, all our problems are solved. Clips of Faith — a traveling picture show — comes to Theis Park (Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard and Oak Street) tonight. The touring fundraiser features fan-created short films and New Belgium beers. The proceeds benefit the Missouri Foundation for Bicycling…
