Harlem, ‘Someday Soon’

Maybe you saw Harlem at the Riot Room a month ago?The Austin trio is one of the better garage acts going these days — though Kansas City has a few bands knocking around town that might give it a run for its money.  In any case, the band, who start a tour with Jack White’s The Dead Weather in July that unfortunately…

LeBron James to Kansas City push begins … even without an NBA team

LeBron James becomes a free-agent on July 1. King James is coveted in every city with an NBA franchise and millions of dollars in salary cap space — New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and Cleveland — an even ones without a team and millions of dollars. Namely, Kansas City. Really. Categories: News Tags: AEG, LeBron James, NBA, Sprint Center,…

Six Hallmark cards not to send to your black or gay friends

Last week, Hallmark yanked a Hoops and YoYo graduation card because the NAACP claimed a dopey joke about black holes was really a dopey joke about black whores. The controversy was a unique waste of time for the NAACP. Not just because it was dumb, but because of all the other Hallmark cards full of stereotypes still on the shelves….

Poll: The glorification of pub fare

I once had a top shelf long island iced tea. It was the end of a night of wedding drinking and a friend had agreed to an exorbitant minimum at a bar for the after party. He was well short of the mark and began to seek out the most expensive drink — sadly this was a bar without aged…

Dick Bryant, attorney for adult businesses, lays out a legal defense of beautiful, naked breasts

Before state representatives passed legislation that would criminalize unregulated nipples, Democratic state Rep. Curt Dougherty filed papers, called reps and did everything short of beg for a fiscal review to see how much killing strip clubs would cost the state. The Republican leadership just ignored him. But as we note in this week’s feature, “Exit Boobies,” that sneering dismissal could…

Food carts could revitalize empty spaces

The empty restaurant spaces in downtown Kansas City could take inspiration from an unconventional plan to breathe life into a New York City landmark. Faction Magazine celebrates their third issue at the Farmhouse (slideshow)

Faction — a local fashion and photography zine — released its third issue last night at the Farmhouse. The patio and restaurant were packed with people flipping through the magazine, eating and mingling. The magazine is the brain child of photographer Jeff Evrard and Carman Stalker of Wearhaus, an event-planning company focused on fashion. Much like the magazine itself, the…

How neighborhoods are defining the urban farming debate

The issue of urban farming has only begun to be explored in Kansas City. The City Council’s decision to change the development code on June 10 and provide more guidance for what’s allowable within the city limits is the first step in a prolonged (and at times heated) discussion between locavores and neighborhood associations (who are not always mutually exclusive)….

You remember local legend Howard Iceberg from C.J. Janovy’s profile of the singer-songwriter about a month ago. If you’re not familiar with Kansas City’s rock shaman, now is a good time to get acquainted: Iceberg is playing a marathon two-hour show with a brand new full-band lineup on Saturday afternoon at Jardine’s. (Iceberg writes that he and his new acoustic…
