June 2010 in photos (slideshow)

We were out and about this month before the summer solstice kicked in and we have the photos to prove it. There was the West 18th Street Fashion Show, showcasing Kansas City’s design stars, and the first Grand River Rally, where you’re never too old to get your boobs painted up real nice (NSFW). If you missed out on what…

Decision on Kansas smoking ban challenge coming Wednesday

Kansas bar and club owners will have to wait one more day to find out if their legal attack on a statewide smoking ban is successful. Shawnee County District Judge Franklin R. Theis heard the bar owners’ case for a temporary injunction against the ban Tuesday morning, and he will issue his ruling by 5 p.m. Wednesday. Categories: News Tags:…

Secret Cities, Tut Tut, Expassionates, 500 Miles to Memphis: Tuesday’s best bets

At RecordBar, Katlyn Conroy — who we just profiled in last week’s print edition — plays on a bill with fellow Lawrence act Tut Tut and North Dakota’s Secret Cities. “Richly orchestrated electronic ballads,” says Elke.  At Czar Bar, it’s more of a down-home feel, with Cincy cowpunk act 500 Miles to Memphis and the easygoing Americana of local group Expassionates. That’s…

John Bersuch’s soundtrack featured in film contest winner

Last Saturday, the Independent Filmmaker’s Coalition of Kansas City held it’s annual “One Night Stand” contest, in which filmmakers are challenged to make a short movie in just 10 hours. Nearly 20 teams spent the day sweating and filming. Among them: musician John Bersuch and producer-videographer Scott Johnson. Their film, ENDANGERED, won second place at the IFC’s screening Saturday night. …

Dwayne Bowe still claims ESPN misquoted him about ‘importing’ groupies

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe says that his teammates aren’t mad at him about his now infamous interview with ESPN The Magazine in which he claimed his teammates used social networking to import NFL groupies while on the road. “No, because now they are finding out it definitely wasn’t me,” Bowe said during an interview with 790 the…

Tropicana’s Mexican popsicles are summer on a stick

“It’s so damned hot … milk was a bad choice.” — Ron Burgundy, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Perhaps iced-milk bars might have helped the fictional anchorman pull out of his downward spiral. Each summer in Kansas City, I rediscover the joys of Paleterias Tropicana’s Mexican popsicles — ice-milk treats made with fresh fruit that are sold at paleterias…

My New TV Set talk Michael Cera music video

The film adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World by Edgar Wright (of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Spaced) is becoming the equivalent of a tentpole film for indie rock fans. (Beck perfoms as the film’s band Sex Bob-Omb, and Broken Social Scene are featured as another fake band called Crash and the Boys.)  To promote the film,…

Big changes at the Marquee Bar & Grill

The Marquee Bar & Grill — no more lunches A lot can happen to a restaurant in a year, particularly in the Power & Light District, which has yet to really catch on as a dining destination. Twelve months ago, The Pitch reviewed the attractive Marquee Bar & Grill in the AMC Mainstreet Theatre located in the newly renovated historic cinema at 14th…

Fireworks season is underway: Watch for flying extremities

It’s that time of year again, when your suspect high school friends and shady neighbors up the block start tinkering with homemade explosives in their garages, all in an effort to make this Independence Day sufficiently epic. It’s also the season of flying flesh. Categories: News Tags: fireworks, fireworks mishaps, improvised explosive device, sparklers

The Pitch Presents: June In Photos

Although summer officially began toward the end of the month, Kansas Citians had already kicked the season off with tons of concerts and events. We checked out geeks and steampunks in all of their finery at ConQuest 41 and witnessed that Backstreet was definitely back at the Midland. Missed out? No worries — we relive the entire month of June…

James Christos, Enigmatic Tour Diary: Entry #7

James Christos checks in from the road, where he’s going to be taking a short 4th of July holiday — from journaling, not from kicking ass, of course. What’s the deal KC!? Well the first leg of the tour has been crazy. Rocked shows, sold music, drank for free, lost about 7lbs, acquired an addiction to Roaring Lion, ventured into…

Franklin Grammer pleads guilty to shooting estranged wife in head, killing her

Franklin L. Grammer Jr. pleaded guilty to second-degree murder yesterday, a little more than a year after ambushing his estranged wife, Betty Jo Grammer, while she was painting a house in Fairway, Kansas, slapping her in a headlock and shooting her in the head, mortally wounding her. Franklin Grammer also pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder for shooting another man….

Moving: Chacko’s Bakery & Catering

Moving, but not very far After ten years serving sweets, sandwiches and salads at 6001 Johnson Drive, David and Rachel Finn, the owners of Chacko’s Bakery & Catering in Mission are moving…just up the street to 6009 Johnson Drive. The Finns are in the process of renovating the storefront formerly occupied by Jersey Shore Bagels and plan to be open in…

No weiner in this contract dispute

Hot-dog eating has officially become a sport. Apparently a contract dispute between Takeru Kobayashi and Major League Eating means the competitive eater from Japan is no longer scheduled to compete in the annual hot-dog-eating contest on July 4 at Nathan’s in Coney Island. Kobayashi’s decision leaves American champion Joey Chestnut without a true challenger. Chestnut nailed down 68 hot dogs…

Prepare to have your kombucha buzz harshed

Concern over the possible alcohol content in kombucha — a fermented tea — led Whole Foods to pull the drink from its shelves recently and has touched off a debate as to whether the health elixir needs further regulation. The drink of choice at yoga studios and farmer’s market has quietly grown into a major business with $295 million in…

Jaywalkers, the trap is set near the Power & Light District

Today’s theme is, again, don’t trust anybody. Just walked to work through the Power & Light District and spotted a couple of motorcycle cops stationed on Main Street between the AMC Mainstreet 6 Theater and the H&R Block building. My guess is this is part of the crosswalk crackdown. Categories: News Tags: Jaywalking, Power & Light District, Power& Light District

Why does this show sound like crap?

No one’s harder on a sound man than another sound man. Need proof? Attend a rock show with an audio engineer — who’s not working the board. (Warning: I do this all the time and don’t actually recommend it.) You’ll swear you can see the off-duty engineer squinting his (or her) ears, dissecting the other engineer’s every twist (or non-twist)…
