David Kerr, Missouri state official, forgets he’s in KC

David Kerr: Hey, KC. Cool arch! A prominent Missouri state official sounded like a road-weary rock musician when he addressed a gathering of business and political leaders in downtown Kansas City this morning. David Kerr, who runs the Missouri Department of Economic Development, spoke briefly at a meeting of the city-funded Economic Development Corporation. In the course of introducing himself, Kerr twice suggested that he standing in St….

Chef Jason Bowers at 12 Baltimore Cafe in the Hotel Phillips will oversee an Easter brunch at the historic downtown hotel from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Priced at $34 for…

Mary Pilcher Cook, Scott Schwab would rather people get sick than lose their ‘freedom’

A cabal of Republicans in the Kansas Legislature have grown desperate in their effort to prevent 280,000 of the state’s citizens from getting health insurance. Sen. “Mean Mary” Pilcher Cook of Shawnee and Rep. Scott “Dopey” Schwab of Olathe are among those pushing the Kansas Health Care Freedom Amendment, a document full of disingenuously patriotic sounding gibberish that would supposedly…

Faron Rosendale dies after fight at Grandpa’s Used Furniture; Morris Grimes charged

Morris E. Grimes admitted punching Faron Rosendale once. Rosendale was found unconscious inside Grandpa’s Used Furniture (10112 East Truman Road) Monday morning around 8:20. Rosendale was stiff and soaked with beer, and the store was torn up (tables and furniture overturned and a mirror broken) with beer bottles scattered around. Rosendale died Wednesday at North Kansas City Hospital, according to…

Incoming: Caribou

Ontario’s electro whiz-kid Dan Snaith (better known as Caribou) is playing the Granada on June 6. Unlike the streamlined, math-y compositions he crafted as the one-man band Manitoba, Snaith ventures into richer psychedelic landscapes with Caribou, tapping spaced-out atmospherics and warped symphonic rackets. Check out the eerie, Twin-Peaks-esque primordial goop that Caribou creates in Snaith’s title track for his forthcoming album, Odessa. (Note: it’s creepy,…

Smashburger to open in Overland Park on April 1

Get ready for smashed patties Overland Park — Smashburger opens at 6551 West 119th Street on April 1. The fast casual burger chain out of Denver is aggressively expanding into the Kansas City area. As in other markets, the newest location will feature several signature menu items exclusive to the restaurant. The Kansas City version of the Smashburger, for example,…

Expect crazy amounts of SXSW coverage, as we catch up with all the local artists down there. First up is this video from James Christos. He’s playing tomorrow night at 9:00 p.m. as part of the Midwasteland Takeover. As you’ll see in the video, you’ll probably be able to spot him working the promo tip down 6th Street, as well….

Kansas beats Lehigh, fails to bust Obama’s bracket

%{}% The Lehigh Mountain Hawks put a scare in the Kansas Jayhawks. But the Jayhawks survived thanks to a double-double from Marcus Morris (26 points and 10 rebounds) and 18 points from Sherron Collins. Lucky for President Obama (and me) that the Jayhawks won or else his bracket would have been totally busted. Unfortunately for Obama, it happened anyway. One…

Jesus to downtown KC: Let’s have a mochaccino

Downtown Kansas City is experiencing a revival in the literal sense. Earlier this month, Church Executive magazine (what, you don’t keep up?) ran a story about the decision made by United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, the Leawood-based megachurch, to open a campus at the Grand Avenue Temple. Methodists have worshiped at Grand and East Ninth since 1866. The Grand…

Breakfast Buffet: Friday, March 19

%{}% The Mission Twitical pub crawl aims for 10 beers between  Lucky’s Brewgrille and the Clarette Club. Cooking with coconut oil inspires a a comparison to Ghee, the Indian clarified butter. Bikinis Sports Bar and Grill aims to be the next Hooters — way to aim high, guys. Here are Lady Gaga’s outlandish costumes reimagined as Gingerbread characters. We live…

Read every issue of Spin ever

That would be every issue of Spin up through the October 2009, technically. And, while I’d like suggest you go read the August 1995 issue for its in-depth interview with Michael Stipe and excellent black and white photography, that also appears to be missing. It’s not as complete as I was led to believe, evidently. Go read everything over at…

Charles Ferruzza talking takeout on the Walt Bodine Show

It’s great when someone else cooks. It’s even nicer when you don’t have to clean. Clothes Whores Pet Peeve No. 10: The Floater

Introducing your countdown to KC’s 10 most frequent fashion failures. We present No. 10: the Floater. There are some dudes who cannot abide a head-hugging hat. Rather than pulling it snug, they “float” it, leaving a doofy reservoir of air between cloth and crown. The result is Exhibit A on the right, whom we caught at the Riot Room for…

7″ Review: A new stack of music from Traffic Street Records

Sam North over at Traffic Street Records has put out a slew of new releases recently, and three of them showed up in my mailbox earlier this week. Like Bats’s Look On the Bright Side is a collection of anthemic punk tunes with some nice melodic hooks buried within. You’ll be able to sing along to the chorus of the…

Parkville Luminary has week’s best headline

Czech out the headline on this story continued from the front page of the March 12 edition of the Parkville Luminary. My pal Mark Vasto, the Luminary’s publisher and editor in chief, is clearly having way too much fun. The story is about Milos Gaspar, a 44-year-old man from the Czech Republic, who was prosecuted in Parkville for failing to…

Inside this week’s Pitch

Christopher Scott froze to death in the lawn of a house near 31st and Monroe. Scott’s friends say he was kicked out of the St. Regis Apartments. In this week’s feature story, Pitch reporter Nadia Pflaum talks to the unhappy residents of St. Regis, who claim St. Regis’ building manager Michelle McCray rules the subsidized housing units by fear and…

A man with a gun was seen running into a wooded area behind the home. More police arrived at the scene as the man reportedly became more aggressive…

The furious Frank Martins rolled to a 82-62 opening-round victory over North Texas. Kansas State’s guard duo of Jacob Pullen and Denis Clemente showed why they’re one of the best in the nation. Clemente finished with 17 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, two steals and a block. Pullen added 15 points, three assists and three steals. Forward Curtis Kelly chipped…

Midwasteland Takeover Descends Upon Austin

As our local bands journey southward for SXSW, Kansas City’s home-away-from-home down in Austin is already making its mark. Here’s a video from showcasing band member and organizer Steve Tulipana of our Kansas City brethren cloaking their building with a giant banner in Austin in preparation for the Midwasteland Takeover. After making camp (complete with booze and food,) the 32-plus local showcase…
