Breakfast Buffet: Wednesday, 7/08

%{}% Apparently meatless Mondays are catching on — as are the vegetarian-yet-appealing-to-carnivores recipes popular on that day. Any homebrewers looking to party? Here’s just the ticket this Saturday. Some of the most expensive restaurants in the world are being forced to close by this recession. London is getting hit especially hard. The facts about what is and isn’t allowed under…

Female-fronted LA metal band Otep plays the Beaumont on August 11, just one week before the release of their latest album, Smash the Control Machine, on Victory Records. Tickets go on sale this Friday, July 10, at 5pm. As an added bonus, the folks putting on the show—Hunt Industries—made the following offer via their MySpace: Are you in a band?…

Crime Scene KC’s ‘From the Police Scanner’ is amazing

Sara Shepherd is filling in for James Hart on Crime Scene KC, and she’s posted some hilarious dispatches from the police scanner. There are reports of a customer locking a KCP&L tech in a basement for shutting off the electricity, a snake fleeing the scene and my favorite: “Female wearing a brown dress and gray boots. Calling party advised that…

First Friday B-boys @ Bridgeport Church

Haven’t you always wanted to breakdance in church? This past First Friday, July 3, some local b-boys (Ray and Leo Night Us, if we’re not mistaken) uprocked, downrocked and tornadoed around the floor of 18th Street’s Bridgeport Church and Art Space before a crowd of Crossroads tourists, who kept bumping into featured artist John Raux’s paintings. Unfortunately, I stopped recording…

This church will help you make a first down

This isn’t the first time this publication has praised Calvary Temple Baptist. Back when most churches refused to speak about HIV/AIDS victims, the church and its pastor Eric Williams were reaching out to the community to increase awareness. As this May 2008 feature, “A Change is Gonna Come,” recounted, they’ve got a lot more help today. Now they’re dealing with…

How’d Children’s Mercy’s Twitter/surgery experiment go …

A little dry, a little boring but the tweets say the surgery went well for the 10-year-old patient who suffered sever burns on his neck from fireworks six months ago. So that’s a good thing. My favorite from Children’s Mercy’s Twitter: Dr. Singhal is happy with the surgery, and is getting ready to update Mom.about 6 hours ago from web…

Killa City: Teen tells Fox 4 that he wasn’t involved in homicide

A 16-year-old boy told Fox 4 that he wasn’t involved in a shooting that killed a man a couple weeks ago. “I’m not no shooter,” the 16-year-old told Fox 4. “I’m a little kid. C’mon. I can’t kill nobody.” The interview took place just before the teen spoke with homicide detectives, who wanted to question the teen about the killing…

Killa City: WyCo DA charges Anderson Cheffen with first-degree murder in toddler’s death

Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerome Gorman upgraded the charges against Anderson Cheffen on Tuesday to first-degree murder in the death of a 10-month-old child. On June 17, prosecutors charged 31-year-old Cheffen with physically abusing the baby in Edwardsville.  Cheffen is locked up in the Wyandotte County Jail with a $1 million bond. Cheffen’s next court date is scheduled for July…

Jason Whitlock is looking for ‘a blossoming May flower’ to ‘fertilize into a special, 28-year-old bouquet’

Ladies, this is Jason Whitlock’s mating season. His latest Fox Sports column says he’s a fan of “June-December romances,” then adds: “but a blossoming May flower certainly could be fertilized into a special, 28-year-old bouquet by a patient and attentive gardener.” That’s a garden I’d prefer to stay away from. The boobie magnet preaches that the real victims of Steve…

Spat between Royals blogger and organization ends with whimper

%{}% Hot topic among Royals fans this weekend was the “ban” levied by the club against Rany Jazayerli, who pens Rany on the Royals and also hosts a Royals heavy radio show on WHB 810. Jazayerli went into the Royals doghouse for a column calling for the head of trainer Nick Swartz. A never ending string of injuries led Jazayerli…

Incoming: Throw Rag at the Jackpot, August 21

Debauched purveyors of rock ‘n’ roll hailing from the Salton Sea, Throw Rag are one of those bands I keep missing by just that much. They opened for Gogol Bordello, and we showed up right as the were finishing their last song. Every night they ever played the Replay? I had to work. Then, for years—nothing. Fucking. No. Thing. They…

Download Angie Fights Crime’s “June”

Brent Kinder, late of kill.pop and the blackwater, has released another group of tunes from his recording project Angie Fights Crime. This six song EP is entitled June. Kinder writes that it is: a little ep of some musical ideas that i was saving for a band, but the band never appeared so i made them into songs myself. Makes…

Blanc Burgers + Bottles is a trend leader

There is a perception among culinary crowds that food trends start on the coast and move inwards. Sushi, the cupcake craze and sous vide all became trendy in New York and San Francisco before coming to Kansas City. But Blanc Burgers + Bottles is making waves through the industry by being an early adopter. The influential restaurant trade magazine Fast…

Michael Jackson Remberances High and Low

As the Michael Jackson memorial service gets underway at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, I felt it appropriate to provide both high and low tribute to the memory of the late King of Pop. The high: A 360-degree panoramic view of Jackson’s collection of pinball machines, as well as Star Wars ephemera and assorted other toys. It takes a while to…

KC cops busy with early morning shootings

Early Tuesday morning, shots fired into an apartment in 500 block of Gillis didn’t injure anyone, although there were people in the apartment, Kansas City police say. View Larger Map On the way to the apartment shooting, officers met a man in a black truck who they say may have been hit by a shotgun pellet. His injuries were minor….

How to send food back

The scene is a fine-dining restaurant. An irate customer calls over his waiter and demands to know what a fly is doing in his soup. “It looks like the backstroke,” the waiter calmly replies. So goes one of the more famous “There’s a fly in my soup!” jokes. In real life, sending back a dish is not such a witty…
