Watch Arrowhead construction unfold

Arrowhead Pride snapped some cool-looking, washed out ’70s-style photos of the construction at Arrowhead Stadium, which you should check out. Then take another look at this Webcam watching the stadium renovations (drag your cursor over the stadium to get a close up view) and video. And if you’re not overloaded with the pride that comes with paying for all of…

Pesticides don’t cause cancer. Organic gardens do!

Before the Obama family moved into the White House, several high-profile food advocates called for the family to build a garden. Sure enough, they did. Or at least their gardeners and chefs did. Little did people know that this 50 x 20-foot garden would lead to starvation and cancer. That is, if you believe the American Council on Science and…

Your food is safe from terrorists. Mostly.

While threats of terrorism receives lots of attention, a discreet attack on our food and/or water supply would likely have just as devastating results. Fortunately, academics are on the case. How easy would it be for terrorists to launch a widespread food attack? Not very easy, it turns out. A professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore has studied the…

Killa City: Grand jury indicts three men in killings of Justin Budreau and Andrew Eli

This came in late Friday. A grand jury indicted Eria Doss, Michael Gunn and Larry Marshall in the murders of Justin K. Budreau and Andrew J. Eli. The grand jury’s indictment ups the charges against Doss and Gunn to first-degree murder. News reports have described the killings of Budreau, 24, and Eli, 23, as “execution-style.” Jackson County prosecutors previously charged…

Revolt against urban chickens has begun

Last week The Kansas City Star ran a story about Dave Crupper and his quest to raise chickens, which had run afoul of Overland Park law. Within a couple of hours the story had been picked up on Drudge Report. The Washington Post ran a similar story a day later and suddenly it seemed every newspaper was struggling to get…

Water on its way out

When it comes to food trends, the state of New York is what is known as an early adopter. It was one of the first states to enact a smoking ban. Recently, it passed a law that chain restaurants had to post calories on their menus, an idea that’s already spread to places like California and Indiana. Now Gov. David…

Breakfast Buffet: Monday, 5/18

%{}% The Wort Hog describes her recent trip to buy beer as being like a kid in the candy store (but, Bud Ice?). A detailed account of making pho ga, a “Vietnamese chicken noodle soup.” The familiar question “What are you doing this weekend?” has a lot different meaning in America than in Colombia. Long before there was the French…

Why is John Danforth still a Republican?

John C. Danforth is one Missouri’s most admired — and least astute — politicians. The former U.S. senator and ambassador to the United Nations has criticized the Republican Party for transforming itself into the “political arm of conservative Christians.” His observations carry weight. Danforth is both a Republican and an ordained Episcopal priest. But at some point, Danforth may need…

Parkinson’s dirty deal, part 3

When President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Rural Electrification Administration in 1935, the vast majority of American farmers were still using kerosene lanterns and wood-burning stoves. Unlike their urban counterparts, rural residents had little access to electricity. Under the REA, dozens of mom-and-pop, customer-owned companies brought power to the countryside. In 1957, six of those community cooperatives in Western Kansas…

My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult not as broken up as was thought.

When the Thrill Kill Kult canceled its gig Wednesday night at the Record Bar the story was that the band had broken up. According to RB co-owner Steve Tulipana, Marston “Mars” Daley (aka Buzz McCoy) from the band called him Wednesday morning to deliver the news. The entry I posted about the cancellation and alleged breakup took on a little…

Fox 4 turns 60

%{}% Fox 4 is old enough for AARP but not old enough for retirement. The station’s 60th anniversary site is really cool. There’s old photos and video, including the newscast the day after the 1981 Hyatt skywalk collapse. Stop by the site. It’s cheaper than buying a birthday card. Categories: News Tags: fox 4

Three free songs from Soft Reeds

Soft Reeds is the Nashville-based project of ex-Kansas City musician Ben Grimes. Back in November, the Wayward Son wrote about how for Grimes — who used to front the Golden Republic — a departure from this scene was just what he needed to get his muse back. Today, Grimes posted new evidence of that — three Soft Reeds songs, free…
