Young Thug, Har Mar Superstar and Black Violin lead your music week

Young Thug

On the cover of Young Thug’s September-released album, Jeffery, the 25-year-old rapper wears a periwinkle-and-white costume by haute designer Alessandro Trincone — the androgyny suggesting an artist comfortable in the spaces between. His music heartily reinforces this perception. Young Thug — born Jeffery Lamar Williams — has never taken the traditionalist’s approach. On Jeffery, his voice dips and drags, twists and chokes, snagging on the lyrics and challenging you to untangle the threads that knot the album together. Each of the tracks on the disc is named for a rap idol — “RiRi,” “Wyclef Jean,” “Kanye West” — yet the songs are about no one but Young Thug himself, and the careful manner in which he blurs the lines of identity.

8 p.m. Monday, November 21, at the Midland, 1228 Main

Har Mar Superstar

When Har Mar Superstar (Sean Tillman to his mama) released Bye Bye 17, in 2013, it was as if the Minneapolis-via-Brooklyn artist had turned over a new leaf: The dance-party synths that dominated his earlier records had given way to a warmer sound, a throwback vibe. This year’s Best Summer Ever is an interesting follow-up: Imagined as a “greatest hits” concept album of sorts, featuring the would-be highlights of Tillman’s career from 1950 to 1985, Best Summer Ever sounds plucked from a handful of eras, finding room for synths and doo-wop. Tillman here tries on a series of wild outfits that all, somehow, look amazing on him. Lawrence’s White Girl and Minneapolis electro-funk act Tickle Torture open.

7 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, at Riot Room, 4048 Broadway

Black Violin

The title of Kev Marcus and Wil B.’s latest album is Stereotypes — a fitting word, considering that their project, Black Violin, exists outside expectations. The two African-American artists — full names Kevin Sylvester and Wilner Baptiste — are trained musicians who picked up their respective instruments (Sylvester on the violin, Baptiste the viola) in high school orchestra. Today, their lauded act blends classical-derived sounds with hip-hop. Sylvester and Baptiste harmonize and rap over their arrangements, allowing audiences to appreciate two forms of music usually kept separate and shattering, yes, a few stereotypes in the process.
