Yonder Mountain String Band

Hippies love grass, right? So it goes to reason that hippies, playing for other hippies, would love bluegrass, too (especially if it’s laced with a big helping of green). Since forming in 1998, Dave Johnston, Ben Kaufmann, Adam Aijala and Jeff Austin have built a reputation for high-energy, modern bluegrass shows that often turn into long, twangy jam sessions. Depending on which song you’re listening to on the band’s latest album, The Show, you get bluegrass (“Out of the Blue”), country (“Fingerprint”) or even rock (“Complicated”). Occasionally there’s a mixture of all three. But don’t worry about any stoner-mystic pretentiousness harshing your vibe; Yonder Mountain String Band is more interested in pulling the plug and jamming campfire-style than transporting you to another realm. The group hosts a two-day residency at Liberty Hall — proof that, to a jamgrass band, more is always more.
