To help support her family, Aviva toils as a hotel cook and suppresses her lifelong literary aspirations. But when her sister, Anita, introduces her to the washed-up novelist Oded, he recognizes Aviva’s talent, mentoring her and inspiring her to pursue her dream. Israeli Film Academy, the film screens at 7 p.m. in the social hall of the Jewish Community Center (5801 West 115th Street, Overland Park, 913-327-800). Presented by the Israeli Committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City, the Israeli Movie Club continues on first Thursdays through March, with a slate including 1977’s Operation Thunderbolt, 2007’s Like a Fish Out of Water and 1988’s The Summer of Aviya.
