Women on the Court

A hot game tonight at Sprint Center (1407 Grand, 816-949-7050) determines who goes to the Final Four — in the women’s bracket. This season, we saw Nebraska women go on a 30-game winning streak that lasted until the Big 12 semifinals earlier this month. We saw Baylor’s 6-foot-8-inch freshman Brittney Griner dunking — and then getting suspended for a couple of games after slugging Texas Tech’s Jordan Barncastle on the court. It saw Texas A&M coach Gary Blair leaving the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City with a first-place trophy — and griping about low attendance and virtually nonexistent media coverage for college women’s hoops. Not to endorse gals breaking each other’s noses in the paint or to suggest that Blair is right, but let’s just say tickets for the NCAA Women’s Regional Championship ($48 for adults, $20 for children, at the Sprint Center box office or through Ticketmaster) should be plentiful, regardless of who ends up playing tonight’s game. (Print deadlines prevent us from knowing.) Fathers, take your girls. Tipoff is at 8 p.m.
